Mike Shearer

Mike Shearer is an Assistant Indoor Volleyball Coach and Head Beach Coach at Saint Leo University.

Mike Shearer joined the Saint Leo volleyball coaching staff prior to the 2019 indoor season. He serves as an assistant coach for the indoor program while leading the beach volleyball team.

In his first season on the sidelines of the indoor court the Lions captured their first NCAA South Region Championship and NCAA Elite Eight appearance.

He then transitioned his efforts to the sand where the Lions has their season cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Lions had captured six victories prior to the stoppage including Shearer’s first at the helm, a 5-0 victory over Warner. The Lions faced several top programs including facing three top-20 ranked opponents.

Shearer joined the Lions after serving as an assistant coach for NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan University.

Shearer has over 12 years of coaching experience including serving on the staffs at Eastern Michigan, Ohio University, Maryland, West Alabama, Elon, College of Charleston and Edinboro.

In his two seasons at Eastern Michigan he served as the primary recruiter and handled all opponent video breakdown and scouting. While at Ohio, the Bobcats were ranked among the top-25 in the AVCA Coaches Poll and ranked first in the MAC in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, kills per set and aces per set.

While at the College of Charleston he led the research in developing a beach volleyball program and served as the project manager for the court construction for the new program. Once the program began he served as an assistant coach and helped train the beach team.

Shearer also brings head coaching experience as he served as the Interim Head Coach at the University of West Alabama during the 2012 season. He helped two players earn all-conference honors and went five sets with nationally-ranked West Florida.

Prior to entering the college ranks Shearer spent two seasons working both boy’s and girl’s high school volleyball in Pennsylvania. He served as the head coach of the girl’s varsity squad at Hatboro-Horsham and was the boy’s head coach at North Penn. Shearer led both teams to State Championship qualification. It came in just the third year of the program for the girl’s team at HHHS.

Shearer graduated with a bachelor of arts in administration of justice from Penn State University in 1997 and earned a teaching certification in health and physical education with a minor in coaching from West Chester University in 2002.
