Assistant Coach

Mike Stone

Mike stone

Mike Stone is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Transylvania men’s basketball team for the 2022-2023 season. A former standout for the Pioneers from 2008 through 2012, Stone returned to Broadway and 4th in a coaching capacity after a multifaceted professional playing career and a coaching resume which has evolved in the Bluegrass following his playing days.

Since Stone joined Brian Lane coaching staff, the Pioneers have continued to set the pace atop the HCAC, making conference championship game appearances in both of his seasons in Lexington thus far.

In his first season with the Pioneer coaching staff, Stone was instrumental in helping the Pioneers engineer a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven seasons as the Pioneers swept both the HCAC regular-season and conference tournament championships in the 2019-2020 season.

Stone’s positive impact on the Pioneers following his arrival shined in an array of categories as the Pioneers went 19-9 overall, captured a share of the HCAC regular-season title with a 13-5 record in conference play, and defeated Rose-Hulman in the conference championship game to seal an NCAA postseason berth.

As the lead assistant for Lane’s staff, Stone draws upon his background in skill development and teaching to hone in on player development and scouting duties. In his first year as an assistant with the Pioneers, Transylvania led the HCAC in offense and ranked second in conference in three-point shooting percentage. Four Pioneers earned postseason hardware as upperclassmen Gabe Schmitt and Michael Jefferson earned All-HCAC First Team awards, Lucas Gentry was named All-HCAC Honorable Mention, and Brandon Cromwell was selected as the conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Stone made his return to the Pioneers from Lexington Catholic High School where he served as an assistant coach from 2013 through 2019.

“I am thrilled that Mike is returning to Transylvania as our full time assistant basketball coach,” says coach Lane of Stone’s homecoming. “He was one of the hardest workers in the history of our program when he was a Transylvania student-athlete and that has carried over into his coaching career. The training and personal instruction that he has done with high school, college and professional basketball players will be a huge asset to our players individual improvement and development. Mike's professional playing experience both in the United States and overseas will be a huge plus for us as we continue to broaden our recruiting reach.”

As an assistant with Lexington Catholic, Stone specialized in player development for the school’s middle school and high school teams. While Stone was with the storied program under Brandon Salsman, Lexington Catholic captured the 11th Region championship in 2014-2015.

The Transylvania Class of 2012 graduate draws upon his time as an overseas professional basketball player and his collegiate playing experience at Transy in forming his coaching laurels. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Stone played for the Bowling Green Hornets of the Central Basketball Association in 2013-2014. The following year, Stone played abroad with the Suncoast Clippers of the Queensland Basketball League in Australia.

Stone’s professional experiences followed a winning career at Transylvania where he played under Lane, leading the Pioneers to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2012 and two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles. Stone served as a team co-captain as a senior at Transylvania and won the Lee Rose team award in 2011. The Lexington native graduated from Transylvania with a double major in Economics and Business Administration.
