Phil Stern was appointed the College of Mount Saint Vincent's Director of Athletics and Recreation in July of 2020 after being hired in October 2019 to serve as both the head women's basketball coach, as well as Associate Athletic Director.

Coach Stern took over a program that went 6-17 a year prior and helped bring it back to prominence. Coach Stern's first season with the Dolphins saw the team go 14-11, including a 12-8 mark in Skyline Conference play, en eoute to a semi-finals appearance in the Conference playoffs. Stern also helped guide standout senior Dar'Neisha Brice to a First Team All-Skyline award.

Coach Stern came to The Mount after a fantastic and accolade-filled career at Division I University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Coach Stern, who has 23 years of head coaching experience, departed from UMBC as the school's all-time wins leader. He led the program to an American East regular season championship and an American East Tournament championship, as well as appearances in the NCAA tournament, WNIT tournament and WBI tournament. Coach Stern also saw two of his teams ranked in the WBCA Academic Top 25, as well as taking home American East Coach of the Year honors in 2011.

Coach Stern also made two separate stops at the Division II level, where he worked as the head coach for both the University of South Carolina Aiken and Dowling College. He was the driving force behind USC Aiken, where he was named Peach Belt Coach of the Year, earning an NCAA tournament bid as well leading the team to two Peach Belt North championship finishes and WBCA Academic Top 25 honors along the way. At Dowling, Coach Stern led the team to its first winning season in program history and an ECAC tournament appearance.

A native of Oceanside, New York, Stern earned his bachelor of arts degree in business education from Concordia College in 1994. He currently resides in Haworth, New Jersey where he lives with his wife, Ashley Cieplicki, who is currently the head women's basketball coach at Rutgers-Newark.
