Sam Miles has served as the head coach of the Butler men’s tennis program since August of 2019. Originally hired as the interim head coach after three seasons as an assistant, Butler removed the interim designation from Miles's title in April of 2021.

The 2023 campaign saw Miles lead the Bulldogs to the championship match of the BIG EAST Tournament and posting a runner-up finish. Butler went 15-10 overall, which included a 4-1 mark against BIG EAST opponents during the regular season and wins over DePaul and Creighton in the BIG EAST Tournament. Thomas Brennan was named to the All-BIG EAST first team for the third consecutive season, while Alvaro Huete Vadillo received a second-team selection.

2022 saw Miles coach the Bulldogs to a 13-11 record and make a run to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. Thomas Brennan was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection while Michael Dickson and Alvaro Huete Vadillo were named All-BIG EAST Second Team during Miles’ third season.

In his first year at the helm, Miles led the Bulldogs to an 11-8 record before the season was cut short on March 14, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his first full season as head coach in 2020-21, Miles coached the Bulldogs to an 8-8 record and helped the program reach a semifinal appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Butler’s five-player 2019-20 recruiting class was ranked No. 36 nationally and No. 15 among programs outside the Power 5 by Tennis Recruiting. No Butler recruiting class has ever been ranked higher.

The 2018-19 year marked Miles' third season as an assistant coach at Butler. During that time, the Bulldogs captured the 2017 BIG EAST title and set a single-season record with 21 wins during the 2019 campaign. Butler finished tenth in the ITA rankings for the Ohio Valley region in both 2017 and 2019.

In 2019, Butler placed two teams in the doubles semifinals at the ITA Regional Championships, while Mason Dragos earned All-BIG EAST first-team honors for the fourth consecutive season. Newcomer Thomas Brennan was selected to the All-BIG EAST second team.

The Bulldogs finished the 2018 season with a 14-7 overall record. Michael Dickson was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year while Dragos earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors during Miles' second season.

The 2017 BIG EAST title earned the Bulldogs the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007. The Bulldogs finished the 2017 season with a dual match record of 18-6. The doubles team of Mikheil Khmiadashvili and Dragos earned a spot in the 2017 NCAA Doubles Championships and finished the season ranked ninth in the region. The duo is believed to be the first Butler team to qualify for the event. Khmiadashvili was named BIG EAST Player of the Year.

A 2014 graduate of DePauw University, Miles was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American while playing for the Tigers. Miles compiled an overall singles record of 75-54, including a 26-8 mark as a freshman, earning him a selection as one of four finalists for the NCAA Division III Rookie of the Year Award.

In the fall of 2015, Miles served as the assistant men’s tennis coach at Park Tudor School and helped the team finish second in the state of Indiana despite replacing the top two singles players and number one doubles team from the previous season. Prior to his playing career at DePauw, Miles also led Park Tudor to two state championships as a player.

Miles also has experience in the Indianapolis area as the head tennis professional at Highland Golf and Country Club in addition to being an instructor at both Washington Township and the Meridian Hills Country Club. Miles returned to Indianapolis after serving as an instructor in Jacksonville, Fla., after graduation.

Miles graduated from DePauw with a degree in communications.
