Director of Player Development

Wendell Dunn

Wendell Dunn

Wendell Dunn, a former standout Demon Deacon defensive lineman, returned to the Wake Forest Football program as the first ever Director of Player Development in March 2021. He is set to enter his fourth year on the staff in 2024.

In his role, Dunn helps lead the newly created Football Player Career Development program in a student facing position to help create a meaningful student athlete experience at Wake Forest. Working as a member of the Student Athlete Development team, Dunn oversees the football program’s off-the-field efforts to maximize student-athletes’ potential and help them transition into and out of college.

Dunn’s main responsibility in the role will be to develop relationships with current football student athletes, helping mentor them as a voice off-the-field they can come to with concerns regarding academic, athletic, or career development separate from the Demon Deacon coaching staff.

In addition to personal mentorship, Dunn will lead the team’s career readiness programming, utilizing the Office of Career and Professional Development’s existing Ready 7 program to prepare student athletes for career opportunities after graduation. He also, alongside the director of football alumni relations, leads the Player Career Development program’s mentorship program, learning student athletes’ career interests and connecting them with networking opportunities and one-on-one mentorship with career connectors and supporters of the program within NCAA guidelines. Dunn also leads existing football community service projects, including Hit the Bricks, Pump Up for Piccolo and Santa’s Helper, among others.

A former captain for the Deacs on the gridiron, Dunn rejoins Wake Forest after spending a year as a Youth Support Partner at the non-profit Thompson Child and Family Focus in Charlotte, N.C., where Dunn mentored youth aged 13-21 in the Queen City area, assisting them with job and college applications, resumes, and school meetings, among other duties.

Dunn was a four-time letterman for Dave Clawson on the defensive line, where the Miami, Fla. native finished his Demon Deacon career with 156 total tackles (28 for a loss) and seven sacks. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Wake Forest in 2017, and his master’s degree in education studies in 2019.
