Getting to Know: BJ Ivey, Head Coach Riverview High School
BJ Ivey, Head Boys Basketball Coach at Riverview High School, was recently named 8A State of Florida Coach of the Year! Coach Ivey has coached at his high school alma mater for 10 years and is also an assistant coach for the 17U Nike Team Florida AAU team. Coach Ivey is back for another season directing the Nike Boys Basketball Camp at Riverview High School and is excited to introduce a girls only camp to the area! Held in Bradenton, Coach Ivey will co-direct the Nike Girls Basketball Camp at Lakewood Ranch High School with Lakewood Ranch High School’s Girls Head Coach, Tina Hadley.
1.What made you get into coaching?
I grew up around coaches and quickly realized how impactful a coach can be on a young person’s life. It is said that a coach will impact more people in a year than the average person will in a lifetime. I got into coaching to make a positive impact on young people.
2.What is your favorite camp drill and why?
My favorite camp drill is the buzzer beater drill. All the kids get super excited when we do the drill and they love the opportunity to hit the buzzer beater shot for a prize!
3.What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?
The key for an incredible camp experience for me is to have campers who come to camp determined to learn and improve.
4.Your perfect camper on Day #1 arrives with what qualities?
The most important qualities for a camper to arrive with on Day 1 would be as follows: #1 They are a great listener! #2 they have a burning desire to improve #3 they aren’t afraid to make mistakes. #4 they work hard! #5 they are good teammates to other campers.
5.Which college or pro Coach do you admire and why?
Greg Popovich because he always gets his team to play unselfishly and they move the basketball extremely well. They are always well disciplined on defense!
6.What is your “go-to” Nike gear?
My “go-to” Nike gear would have to be the legend long sleeve t-shirt!
7.What’s in your basketball bag?
In my Nike Elite backpack I have an extra shirt, socks, a pair of basketball shoes, as well as my Nike coaching clip board!
