Camp Safety: What Parents Should Look For (Beyond the Basics)
Choosing a sports camp for your young athlete can feel like a research project, from comparing skill levels to reading reviews to decoding schedules. Within all this, safety can be one of the trickiest parts to figure out. Camps often talk about on-field experiences in their informational materials and put pictures of athletes having a great time front and center on their websites. But how do you read between the lines to figure out if a sports camp is getting athlete safety right?
While most reputable camps will cover the basics, it’s helpful to dig a little deeper to find the right fit for your athlete. Here’s a checklist of what to look for beyond the obvious.

The Sports Camp Safety Checklist
✓ The coaches have deep expertise in their sport.
At a sports camp, safety starts with great coaching. Coaches who know their sport inside and out aren’t just better at teaching drills. They’ll also know the signs for when an athlete is pushing too hard, when a movement needs to be modified, and when a player should slow down and recover. Look for camps that openly state their coaches’ credentials. Staff bios and coaching backgrounds are a good place to start. Check coach-to-camper ratios, too. An elite coaching résumé doesn’t matter if your camper won’t get personalized attention!
✓ The camp has clearly stated policies and procedures on its website.
Transparency is a sign of a safe and well-run camp. Everything your family needs to know should be easy to find before you ever hit “register.” This includes clearly written policies on camper behavior and safety procedures, as well as details on what happens in the event of a serious injury or inclement weather. (Knowing these “ins and outs” of how the camp works will also give you peace of mind while your athlete’s away!)
✓ They’re thoughtful about their device policy.
Responsible technology use is an important part of keeping campers safe. That means guardrails and taking misuse seriously. Every camp handles the device question a little differently: Some collect cell phones at the door, while others allow use during downtime. While there’s no single right answer, what does matter is that there’s a clear policy and that staff members actually follow through on it.
✓ There’s a contact number in case of any issues.
If something comes up during camp—like a behavior concern or an interaction that didn’t sit right—parents, campers, and staff should all know where to turn. A trustworthy camp makes this easy. Look through the camp materials for a designated point of contact for any concerns, as well as multiple ways to get in touch.
✓ Prior years’ testimonials call out a well-organized camp environment.
A well-run camp is a safe camp. Often, past campers and their families will tell you exactly that, in their own words. When you're reading through reviews and testimonials, pay attention to what people say about the day-to-day experience. Specific, positive details about how the camp operated are a great sign that the staff members have thought through all the little details that make for a smooth, safe session.
✓ The camp staff creates a supportive environment.
Safety goes beyond the physical. The emotional environment at camp matters just as much as any rule or policy. For sports camps, look for camps that talk openly about being a good teammate, trying hard, and challenging yourself as an athlete—not just being the best or winning! When young athletes feel psychologically safe, they take risks, ask for help, and grow in ways that go well beyond what happens on the field or court.
✓ You have a good gut feeling about the camp.
After all the research, don’t discount this one. If you have a good feeling about what you’ve read after browsing the website, reading testimonials, and getting any answers you need, pay attention to that. And if you’re already starting to feel excited on behalf of your young athlete, you’re probably on the right track.
