GETTING TO KNOW...
Sarah Anciaux - Director of Nike Ultimate Camp at University of Minnesota
When and how did you get into playing ultimate?
"I started playing ultimate in 2012. I played summer league after I was signed up almost against my will. Probably would have been done after that if I was given a choice. I had mentioned to some people that I was in graduate school at the U of M and used to play basketball and track in college. Later, I received a text telling me I had to grab my cleats and go to a field on the U of M campus. Wasn't really given an option! I barely knew what ultimate was, but I'm so glad I started. Now, I'm hooked!"
What is the favorite team you ever played for?
"All the teams I have played for have helped me grow in different ways. I have loved playing on every single one of them! I first learned the fundamentals on my college team. Then continued to build on my throws and knowledge of the game on the club area women's team, POP, the following year. This last year, on Drag'n Thrust, I got to challenge myself physically and mentally playing the top teams in the nation! Every year has been a new adventure and challenge and I have enjoyed every minute of it on all 3 teams."
What is your favorite ultimate drill?
"So many to choose from! I think my all time favorite drill is 4-line drill. You can work on all of the major cuts that happen during a game and throwing to them at full speed with a mark. There is also a hucking option, it's perfect!"
Why did you get in to coaching?
"I coached basketball on and off for years and enjoyed being able to instill the love of the game in young athletes. Once I got into ultimate, I transferred into coaching ultimate. I have always loved being able to teach a skill and see the athletes reactions as they understand the a concept and get the whole picture and why they are doing something instead of just learning through rote memory. It's really a great feeling to see someone understand a concept for the first time!"
Who is your favorite ultimate player of all time and why?
"Patty King. She is the captain of Drag'n Thrust and a great all around person. Works hard on and off the field to better herself and the team. She's also the main reason I got involved in ultimate! She wouldn't let me say no to playing and I am forever grateful."
