During his time with the Bullets, he became one of the most successful coaches in program history, compiling a 158‑104‑44 overall record and a 95‑53‑21 mark in Centennial Conference play. Under his guidance, Gettysburg produced 12 consecutive winning seasons, eight double‑digit win campaigns, and multiple deep postseason runs, including NCAA Tournament at‑large bids in 2014 and 2019.

Men's Soccer Head Coach & Camp Co-Director - Shippensburg University

Spering enters his 18th season as the head men’s soccer coach at Shippensburg University, where he has established a legacy of excellence, growth, and competitive achievement. Throughout his tenure, he has guided the Raiders to numerous program milestones, including school records for single‑season wins, longest winning streak, longest unbeaten streak, most consecutive victories, most goals scored, and the most All‑Conference selections in a single season.

One of the most impressive chapters in Spering’s career came during the program’s remarkable 2010 season, when he led Shippensburg to a school‑record 14 victories, the largest single‑season turnaround in Division II, the program’s first PSAC Championship since 1975, and its first NCAA Tournament berth in school history. That campaign remains one of the most dramatic and successful rebuilds ever recorded by a PSAC program.

Spering’s long‑term success continued with back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2011, multiple PSAC Tournament berths, and standout defensive and attacking performances that helped rewrite the SU record books. His 2018 squad, one of the best defensive units in school history, allowed just 14 goals and recorded eight shutouts—the program’s strongest defensive effort in over 30 years.

Under his guidance, Shippensburg athletes have earned a long list of individual honors, including PSAC major award winners, All‑Region selections, Academic All‑District honorees, and some of the top statistical performers in the conference. Spering’s ability to maximize talent and elevate players’ technical, tactical, and mental development has made him a highly regarded educator at both the collegiate and youth levels.

Before taking over at Shippensburg, Spering gained Division I experience as an assistant coach at James Madison University, helping lead the Dukes to an NCAA Tournament berth and an impressive win average over three seasons. He also served as an assistant at Gettysburg College, contributing to a postseason run in the Centennial Conference.

A native of Frenchtown, New Jersey, Spering began his own playing career at Elmira College before starring at Slippery Rock University, where he was a two‑year starter and letterwinner. He later continued his development by training with the Bolton Wanderers in England and the New Jersey Stallions professional program. Alongside his collegiate and professional experience, he coached extensively at the youth level, most notably with the Northern Steel Select Club, where he helped shape young athletes long before stepping onto the NCAA sideline.

Spering holds an Advanced National Coaching License from the NSCAA, as well as credentials in strength and conditioning and performance training. His academic background includes degrees from Slippery Rock (Exercise Science) and James Madison (Exercise Physiology), complementing his technical and tactical coaching expertise.

Now residing in Gettysburg with his family, Coach Spering continues to bring passion, high standards, and a development‑first approach to every training session, making him an invaluable leader for Nike Soccer Camps.
