    Phillip Gyau

    Howard University's Head Men's Soccer Coach

    Howard University alumnus Phillip Gyau (B.A. '87) was named head coach of the men’s soccer team in April 2014. Gyau brings more than 20 years of experience to the position as a respected coach and a former U.S. National Team Player.

    Phillip Gyau is a former U.S. National Team forward and current head coach of the Howard University men's soccer program in Washington DC. He played professionally in Belgium and the United States, winning multiple championships including the US Open Cup in 1987, and the American Professional Soccer League Championship in 1990 with the Maryland Bays and again in 1994 with the Montreal Impact.

    Gyau then went on to coach the USMNT Beach Soccer team for ten years, Since then, Coach Gyau has become a local coaching legend due to his unrivaled passion, dedication, and work ethic, helping to develop some of the nations top talents, including daughter Mia Gyau and son Joseph Gyau, among many others. His proven success in identifying and nurturing young talents over the last twenty years has earned him great respect within the professional soccer community domestically and abroad, during which he has led local clubs to several state and regional championships. In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to US Soccer, Coach Gyau was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007.

    Paul Torres

    Camp Director

    Coach Paul Torres played six years professionally at the highest levels in Sweden and Norway, Prior to becoming a professional, he was recruited by the University of Maryland in 2009, where he played for two years.

    During his youth, he played for the Bethesda Roadrunners, winning 3 state and 2 regional championships. He later captained the DC United U16 and U18 Academy Teams, won the U17 MLS Cup championship, and captained two teams to the Youth MLS cup championships. Paul was twice named DC United Academy Player of the Year and U-17 MLS Cup MVP. In 2008 and 2009, he was selected to the US Soccer Federation U16 starting IX, and Region 1 U18 starting IX in 2009. Paul also had the opportunity to train with the DC United first team for several years, starting at age 16, which helped to launch his Maryland and Europe careers.

    He is passionate about one on one coaching, bringing together strong groups, and mentoring players who aspire to elevate their game and work hard to realize their full potential.

  • Ages: 6-18

  • Gender: Coed

  • Half Day: 9:00am-12:00pm

  • Full Day: 9:00am-3:00pm

  • Location: Sofive Rockville
  • Meals: Lunch is NOT provided. Please bring a packed lunch

All necessary camp information is on this page. If there are any imperative changes prior to camp start, registered campers will be notified via email and this webpage will be updated

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEE?

  • Training: Dynamic and insightful instruction from the Next Star coaching staff

  • Meals: Meals and snacks are NOT provided. All campers should eat breakfast at home. Campers are advised to bring lunch and snacks. There will be a station to fill water bottles.

  • Supervision: Staff members are strategically placed throughout the camp to provide optimal supervision and participate in all activities.

  • Camp T-shirt: All campers receive a Nike Soccer Camps t-shirt

INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT, & FACILITY

  • Ratio: Low camper to coach ratio

  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience

  • Equipment Needed: All campers must bring athletic/soccer shoes with flat or indoor turf sole, shin guards, athletic shoes, and a water bottle.

  • Facility: Sofive Rockville

  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital

CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO BRING:

Below is a suggested list of clothes, equipment, and personal items. US Sports Camps is NOT responsible for lost or stolen articles or money.

DAY CAMPERS

  • Athletic clothing
  • Athletic/soccer shoes with flat or indoor turf sole
  • Shin guards
  • Water bottle
  • Packed lunch and snacks
  • Small gym bag/backpack

SOCCER BALLS

Nike Soccer Camp Balls can be purchased during registration. Players can choose between a size 3, 4 or 5 ball, which will be shipped out once the order has processed.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

MEDICAL PROTOCOL

Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.
