Head Coach Bob Castle will direct a Nike Softball Camps at Whitworth University this summer! Campers will play at Diana Marks Softball Field in Spokane, Washington. Fantastic facilities and an amazing coaching staff highlight an exciting week of camp for campers ages 8-16.

Head Coach Bob Castle

Bob Castle took over as Whitworth's softball head coach in the fall of 2019 and is now entering his fourth season guiding the Pirates. Castle guided the Pirates to their first winning record of his tenure in 2022, leading the Bucs to a 25-17 overall mark and a 15-13 Northwest Conference record. Six Pirates earned All-NWC honors, including first team honoree Heather Menzer.

Whitworth started out 5-9 in 2020 before the schedule was cancelled by Covid. The 2021 team finished in second-place in the Northwest conference tournament. That team also placed seven Pirates on the All-Northwest Conference team and placed 16 players on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athletics list. The Whitworth softball team ranked 27^th in all of NCAA Division III for grade point average during the 2020-21 academic year with a cumulative team GPA of 3.67.

Castle was an assistant coach for previous head coach Cristal Brown from 2015 through 2018. During that time he was part of three consecutive Northwest Conference titles (2015, 2016, 2017). Castle also worked as a softball umpire for 14 years, including 11 years working at all collegiate levels.

Castle has served as the general manager of the Kalispel Golf and Country Club since May 2016. He is a board member for the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball & Softball organization. He had previously been Whitworth's Assistant A.D. for corporate partnerships and sponsorships and served as the radio voice of Pirate football and basketball for 18 years. Castle attended Spokane Community College, completed his bachelor of arts degree in organizational management at Whitworth University and his masters degree in organizational leadership at North Central University. He also holds certifications in sports management from Columbia University and food and beverage management from Cornell University.
Coach Shannon Wessel

Shannon Wessel played for Whitworth from 2014-2017. Wessel was a sophomore starter on Whitworth’s first ever conference championship in 2015 and she led her team to two subsequent championships and regional appearances in 2016 and 2017.

During her freshman year she started 40 out of 41 games, batted .352 and tied a Whitworth record for most stolen bases in a game (4). Wessel began her career playing second base and transitioned to outfield by her junior year. She earned academic and Northwest Conference recognition all four years. Wessel retired as one of the best hitters in school history, setting a school record for hits in a season (62) and career records for hits (185), runs scored (122) and triples (10).

Wessel graduated from Whitworth in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and stayed to earn her Masters in Teaching in 2018. She joined the softball coaching staff in the fall of 2019 and serves as an assistant coach while teaching science at Mt. Spokane High School.
Assistant Coach Gracee Dwyer

Grace Dwyer graduated from Central Washington University after earning a softball scholarship. While she was at CWU, the Wildcats made many appearances in conference championships and regional play. Dwyer earned Scholar Athlete awards from the GNAC conference each season. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Physical Education and School Health and Movement Studies, and Secondary Education, while also obtaining an endorsement in Math.

Dwyer is a 2018 graduate of University High School. At that time she also completed the Running Start program at Eastern Washington University.

Dwyer was a four-year varsity starter in both slow- and fast-pitch softball for the Titans. Dwyer earned many awards, including first team All-Greater Spokane League seven times, GSL MVP twice, team MVP, team Most Inspirational three times, and team Offensive MVP three times. Grace also played on the varsity basketball team for three years, earning three Most Inspirational awards.

Dwyer led her fast-pitch teams to two state appearances and four regional appearances, winning two of them, and three GSL championships. Due to her athletic and academic success, Dwyer was honored as the Lady Titan Award winner and the GSL Student-Athlete award.

As a coach's kid, Dwyer has experience in leading and assisting many softball camps since playing in select ball. She also joined in coaching the 2022 state-qualifying fast-pitch softball team at University.

Instruction will focus primarily on hitting, fielding, base-running, and game situations. You can expect high demand for these first come first serve camper spots, so please be sure to register early.

Schedule: Monday - Thursday | 9:00am-4:00pm
Check-In: Begins 30 minutes prior to the camp start time.
Meals: Lunch is not provided. Please bring a snack/lunch to camp each day.

INSTRUCTION & FACILITY

Ratio: 1:10 staff to camper ratio
Groupings: Campers are initially grouped by age and moved around accordingly based on skill level.
Facility: Outdoor Fields. Indoor facilities are available during inclement weather conditions.

MEDICAL PROTOCOL

Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

TRAVEL

Nike Softball Camps does not provide transportation from airports, train stations or bus depots. If you have a child flying to camp, please arrange a shuttle or taxi service.

TEAM/GROUP DISCOUNT

If you have a group of campers registering for the same camp, each camper is eligible for a discount. Please have someone contact the US Sports Camps office at 1-800-645-3226 with the names of each camper in the group and we will create a unique discount code for your group. Campers may then register individually through the website at their convenience and apply the offer code during checkout. *Discount amount varies by program. Please call for details.

Diana Marks Softball Field

The Diana Marks Softball Field offers the highest quality in athletic fields. Opened for softball in the spring of 2000, the complex includes a complete softball field with in-ground dugouts, batting cages, and bleachers. The facility has its own state-of-the art scoreboard and a shared press-box with the Whitworth Soccer Field for filming/viewing above and concessions stand below. The facility includes a team changing room and spectator restrooms conveniently located adjacent to the bleachers.
