Westfield State University, Matthew Nodell, is excited to bring you the Nike Swim Clinic at the Westfield Boys and Girls Clubs this fall.

Nike Swim Clinic at Westfield State University is open to any and all entrants. For your safety and benefit, we recommend you have competitive swimming experience (e.g. U.S.S. age group, national qualifiers, high school swimmers, or summer league swimmers) and can swim at least 50 meters in all four competitive strokes: fly, back, breast and freestyle.

    Camp Director

    Matthew Nodell is entering his third season as head coach of the Owls swimming and diving team.

    Camp Director

    Nodell joins the Owls after years of experience in swimming and diving as he spent the last three years as the head varsity swim coach at Belchertown High School. During his time coaching at Belchertown, Nodell was also an assistant swim coach for Monson Parks and Recreation, training and teaching up to 24 children at a time.

    “I am pleased our search for a new coach led us to Coach Matt Nodell” said Nancy Bals, Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Westfield State, who chaired the search committee. “Matt comes to us highly recommended. He is a solid candidate with a strong coaching background, strong values and great communication skills. He will be an asset to our staff and a great addition to our Owl family. I look forward to introducing him to the team and working with him going forward to sustain a successful women’s swimming & diving program.”

    Nodell is also a former athlete himself as he was a four-time CSCAA Scholar All-America swimmer for Elms College where he graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.

    Matthew is currently the manager at M&R Transportation LLC in Holyoke, Mass. after being promoted from assistant manager in 2019. He is responsible for the overall growth of the company in terms of customer growth, addition, and relations as well as dispatching and human resources.

    Assistant Coach

    Ania Axas joins the Westfield State University Swimming & Diving program in her first season as assistant coach, bringing over 16 years of competitive swimming experience to the program.

    Assistant Coach

    A former collegiate swimmer at Kenyon College, she specialized in the butterfly and IM events, earning CSCAA Scholar All-American honors and qualifying for the NCAA DIII Championships each year championships were held during her time with the program. Notably, she was part of Kenyon’s national title winning team her junior year (2022). In 2023, she was part of the team’s 400 Medley Relay team which earned first place at the 2023 NCAA championships and finished in 4th place in the 200 butterfly. She was voted team captain by her fellow teammates and awarded Kenyon’s Stephen E. Bennett Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the graduating senior who has consistently supported the Kenyon team in devotion to training and competition.

    Before coming to WSU, Axas served as an assistant coach at Hampshire Regional YMCA, where she helped guide swimmers of various age groups to work towards personal and team goals. She is passionate about fostering a team culture built on hard work, accountability, and continuous growth. Outside of the pool, Axas holds degrees in neuroscience and psychology from Kenyon College, as well as an MBA in healthcare management from Fitchburg State University.

    When not on deck, Ania enjoys staying active — swimming, running, traveling — & trying new coffee shops. She also currently works as a medical assistant and hopes to pursue a career as a physician assistant.

  • John Wheat

    Assistant Coach

    John Wheat joins the Owls with 13 years of swimming experience and five years of coaching. He has served as an assistant coach for the Agawam Varsity Swim Team for four seasons and as the head coach of the Agawam Piranhas, the town’s Parks and Recreation team, for five seasons.

    Drawing from his athletic journey, John is passionate about pushing swimmers to reach their potential while helping them avoid common pitfalls. Outside the pool, he supports athletics as the Operations and Equipment Assistant at American International College. John is excited to bring his experience and dedication to the Westfield swim team, helping athletes develop both their skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

You can expect a high demand for these first-come-first-served camper spots, so please be sure to register early. This fall, the Nike Swim Clinic at Westfield State University is offering a clinic on August 24 at the Westfield Boys and Girls Club.

  • Camp Type: Half Day Clinic
  • Schedule: 2:00pm-5:00pm
  • Check-In: 1:30pm at Westfield Boys and Girls Club
  • Meals: No meals provided. Please bring healthy snacks.
  • Program: The Stroke Technique program is designed to provide competitive swimmers with a better understanding of swimming fundamentals in each stroke. Stroke refinement along with constructive feedback will be the focus of the clinic, as well as starts enhancement, and allows each participant to gain a greater knowledge of proper stroke mechanics and ways to improve themselves individually.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEE?
  • Instruction: Morning training sessions
  • Supervision: Campers are supervised by staff during clinic hours.
  • Camp Prizes: Campers will receive a Nike Swim Camps prizes.
INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY
  • Ratio: 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio
  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience per the Director's discretion.
  • Equipment Needed: Please bring your water swimsuit, swim cap, goggles and towel(s)
  • Facility: Westfield Boys and Girls Club
  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from the clinic on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours, so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

TEAM DISCOUNT: If five or more campers register together, each camper is eligible for a $25 discount. Please have a team contact reach out directly to the USSC office at 1-800-645-3226 to receive a discount code to identify your group. Campers may then register through the website at their convenience and apply the coupon code during check-out.
