    Coach

Since taking the reins in 1991, Head Coach Jackie Bagwell has established the Amherst College women's tennis program among the elite in NCAA Division III, capturing the NCAA Division III national championship in 1999 and coaching Amherst student-athletes to two singles national championships and six doubles national championships.

    Jackie Bagwell

    Coach

Bagwell has amassed 475 dual match wins in her career, third-most among active Division III head coaches, with 449 of those wins coming in her 31 seasons at Amherst. She ranks among the all-time top 10 in both wins and winning percentage in Division III history. Bagwell has led the team to 15 or more wins in 18 campaigns and her teams have posted 20-win seasons on five occasions.

The Kokomo, Indiana, native led the Purple & White to Amherst's first NCAA national championship in any sport as her 1999 squad capped a perfect 19-0 season with a 5-2 win over arch-rival Williams in the national championship match. Bagwell's squads have reached at least the quarterfinals in 24 of the last 27 NCAA Division III Tournaments, including 15 trips to the semifinals, with five national runner-up finishes and four third-place finishes. Since the NESCAC began crowning a conference champion in 2001, Bagwell's teams have captured nine NESCAC titles.

Bagwell’s squads produced back-to-back national singles champions in 1999 and 2000 and have been even more successful in doubles action, taking home the NCAA title on six occasions (2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). Amherst's six doubles championships are more than any other school in Division III history. Bagwell coached Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 as they became the only doubles pair in Division III history to win three national championships and Devlin became only the second woman to win four Division III doubles titles. A total of 26 Amherst student-athletes have earned 62 All-America selections during Bagwell's tenure.

Bagwell earned Boston Area Coach of the Year honors at the annual Boston Sports Awards in September of 2000, going up against former Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams and former Boston Bruins head coach Pat Burns — among others — for the honor. Bagwell was named the 2007 and 2014 NESCAC Coach of the Year, and in 2011 she was honored as the ITA's Northeast Coach of the Year.

As an undergrad, Bagwell spent three seasons at Columbus College before transferring to the University of Texas–Permian Basin, where she helped lead the Falcons to an NAIA National Tournament appearance. She graduated from the University of Indiana in 1986 with a degree in history/physical education and worked as a teaching pro at the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center in Florida. Prior to moving to Amherst, Bagwell spent three seasons coaching tennis and squash at Hamilton College.

    Caitlyn Lawrence

    Coach

After not competing in the 2020 or 2021 season due to COVID-19, Lawrence led the Pioneers to their most winningest season in over a decade in the 2022 spring season. In addition to her coaching commitments at Smith, Lawrence is one of the founding members of the Smith Athletics Equity and Inclusion Council.

Before her time at Smith, Lawrence was the head coach for both the Men's and Women's tennis programs at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. While at Hartwick, on the women's side she coached three Empire-8 all-conference singles team selections and Hartwick's first Empire 8 Player of the Year. On the men's side, she led them to their first conference appearance in almost a decade and tied the team's 1988 record for most wins in a season.

Lawrence served as the Director of Summer Programs and a coach at Simcoe Tennis in Ontario, Canada. From 2007 to 2015, she coached high-performance junior teams and worked with athletes who have competed at the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III levels. Her work with the program played an integral role in the creation and development of junior leagues that mirrored the college format, giving juniors the opportunity to prepare for the college student-athlete experience.

  • Ross Silverberg

    Coach

Ross Silverberg is set to begin his first season with the Amherst College women’s tennis program in 2025-26.

    Ross Silverberg

    Coach

Ross comes to Amherst after serving as the Assistant Coach for Swarthmore College for the past two seasons. In the 2024-2025 season, Swarthmore won the Centennial Conference title for the first time since 2006. The team also reached the second round in the NCAA National Championships, which was its first NCAA appearance since 2007. Silverberg helped guide Swarthmore to a program-record seven selections to the All-Centennial Team. For these efforts, Silverberg was a recipient of the 2025 Centennial Conference Coaching Staff of the Year alongside Coach Loomis and was elevated to Associate Head Coach.

In his first season with the team, Swarthmore achieved a top-20 national ranking and reached the Centennial Conference Championship. Six individual players earned all-centennial recognition, including selections in First Team singles and doubles. The first doubles pairing qualified for the NCAA National Championships and ten individuals earned Academic Honor Roll.

Prior to joining Swarthmore, Ross coached the Cherry Hill High School East Boys Tennis team. In that role, Ross led the team to a top-10 state ranking and winning the South Jersey Group IV Title. Ross has coached numerous players competing collegiately and has also instructed at the University of Pennsylvania Tennis Center, Philadelphia Country Club, Loomis Racquet Academy, and Berlin Voorhees Tennis Center. In the summer of 2025, Ross became Founder & Director of the Haddon Township Summer Tennis Camp.

Ross graduated from Franklin and Marshall College (F&M) in 2013, majoring in Government and minoring in Economics. He was the #1 singles and doubles player for the Diplomats and team captain. Additionally, he was one of only two Centennial Conference (CC) Player of the Year award winners in program history. He earned All-CC First Team honors on three occasions – which made him just the 15th in CC history to accomplish that feat at the time. Silverberg totaled seven All-CC accolades in his career with four singles awards and three doubles honors. He is tied for the F&M career leader in wins with a 66-22 record, while his 20-9 mark in 2013 is tied for the Diplomats' single-season record.

After graduating from F&M, Ross earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and then completed a Masters in Education from Rutgers University. Ross has practiced law and taught Social Studies for multiple years.
