Camp Coaches

  • Michael Herman

    Director

Michal Herman was hired as the 11th head women’s tennis coach in Johns Hopkins history on August 12, 2024. He joined the Blue Jays from Samford University, where he spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach.

    Michael Herman

    Director

In his first season at Homewood, Herman led the Blue Jays to a 16-8 record and a trip to the NCAA Semifinals. In its first season as an independent, JHU earned an at-large bid to the tournament and upset a pair of top-five teams en route to the semifinals. Kamila Wong and Ava Li earned a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Jay Xiao earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals. Wong, Li and Xiao all earned All-America honors from the ITA.

Herman helped Samford to a 15-8 record and a berth in the Southern Conference title match last season. The Bulldogs’ 15 wins in 2024 are the most for the program in more than a decade. Two Bulldogs earned First Team All-SoCon honors in singles and teamed up for first team all-conference honors in doubles. Samford also produced a SoCon All-Freshman Team selection.

Herman went to Samford after a three-year stint as an assistant for the Washington College men’s and women’s tennis teams. In the Spring of 2022, he served as interim head coach for both programs. Herman helped the WC tennis programs to a combined 47 wins, including the COVID-shortened 2021 season, along with four berths in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Eight singles players and four doubles teams garnered All-Centennial Conference honors during his three years on the Eastern Shore.

Herman was a four-year letterwinner at Goucher College, where he graduated in May 2020 with degrees in business management and Spanish. He is currently pursuing an MBA from Samford. Herman helped the Gophers to three straight Landmark Conference Championships and ranked seventh in program history in doubles wins (44) when he graduated. He was named the Landmark Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017 and went on to earn all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. Herman was the recipient of the Goucher Athletic Department’s Neumann Award as a senior.

SKILL LEVELS & GROUP PLACEMENT

Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week. Participants are then sorted by ability first, then age per the Camp Director's discretion - adjustments are made as needed during camp.

While there are many ways to define skill levels, the following descriptions are what the Camp Directors at Nike Tennis Camps will use to organize and group camp participants. At the time of registration, please choose the level that best represents your experience:

  • Beginner: Players who are new to the game and have little to no formal instruction. They are focused on learning the fundamentals and the basic rules of tennis. Typically play for recreation and have very little or no match-play experience. USTA rating of 2.0 or lower, or no rating.

  • Intermediate: Players who can serve and maintain rallies with some consistency. They are fairly reliable with medium-paced shots but may struggle with certain strokes and lack precision in directional control and power. Generally play recreationally at their local club. USTA rating of 3.0.

  • Advanced: Players with dependable strokes and strong directional control. They display an all-around competitive spirit, improved court coverage, and are developing strategies for both singles and doubles play. These players compete regularly at local clubs or travel to participate in USTA tournaments. USTA rating of 3.5 and above.

The Johns Hopkins men's and women's tennis teams debuted brand-new tennis courts in the fall of 2014. The $1.5 million facility upgrade included a complete resurfacing of all six courts with Deco Turf, a multi-layer cushioned tennis court surface that provides maximum player comfort with exceptional performance. It is the same surface as the US Open and features the same color scheme as the Australian Open. The upgrade also included a state of the art lighting system for night matches.
