Camp Coaches

  • Modise Dominic WTEN24

    Dominic Modise

    Director

Possessing a wealth of experience that spans nearly all NCAA divisions and international competition, as well, Dominic Modise joined the Kenyon College staff as the head coach of the Owls women’s tennis program in the summer of 2024. Modise is the owner of Play College Sports USA, a company in Helsinki, Finland designed to place prospective student-athletes in colleges and universities across the United States. Concurrently, he played the role of tennis professional at HVS Tennis Academy, also in Helsinki. Prior to moving overseas, Modise amassed 18 seasons of collegiate coaching experience, most recently at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was head coach of the women’s program from 2012 through 2018. In that time, he took a program that was winless for two seasons and progressed to earning first-time regional and national team ranks. In his final three seasons, the Golden Eagles had a combined 49-18-1 record, including a program-best 18-6 mark in 2018.

    Dominic Modise

    Director

Prior to coming to Southern Miss, Modise was named the head coach of the North Carolina Wesleyan men's and women's tennis programs in 2007. The 2012 season saw Modise's teams continue to raise the expectations of North Carolina Wesleyan men's tennis after capturing a fourth-straight USA South regular season title, tournament crown and NCAA berth. The Bishops were ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation earlier in the season after defeating Kenyon College, which recently made a national championship appearance. This season also saw Wesleyan's women's team turn the corner with a third straight winning season and a share of the program's first USA South regular season championship.

His five-year tenure at NCWC saw Modise produce 44 All-Conference performers (29 male, 15 female), four USA South Rookies of the Year (three males, one female), ITA Player of the Year to Watch, ITA Rookie of the Year, ITA Regional Doubles Champions, All-American (three males), NCAA Elite 8 and three Sweet 16 finishes, a Top 10 national rankings and one USA South Player of the Year. His Bishops combined for nine conference regular season and/or tournament championships, and he exits as the all-time winningest coach in the history of both programs. For his efforts, Modise earned the league's Coach of the Year award on four occasions.

Previous to NCWC, Modise helped the Buffaloes earn an NCAA Tournament berth and a third-place finish in the Big 12 Conference. Both overall records during the dual season (16-8) and in the conference (9-2) were school-bests since 1999.

Among his responsibilities, Modise assisted the CU success on the singles court at the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions. All three slots were a combined overall mark of 65-26 (.714), 47-21 (.691) in dual play, and 22-10 (.688) against the conference. He also coached the No. 3 doubles tandem of Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec to position champion conference honors with a perfect 9-0 record.

Before joining the Buffalo staff, Modise spent two years as head coach at Nicholls State University (Thibodaux, La.) rebuilding the men's tennis program after a 15-year absence. He guided NSU to the conference tournament for the first time in school history and coached the team to a top-five league finish with only two scholarship student-athletes.

Prior to his successful efforts at Nicholls State, Modise was the assistant men's and women's tennis coach at the University of New Orleans. There he coached a pair of women to national recognition among the elite Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top-100 rankings and guided both programs to top-five finishes in the Sun Belt Conference. Additionally, Modise helped raise $15,000 to benefit the tennis programs and assisted with Children's Wish and the Privateers fundraising tournament. He has also been involved with fundraising through Legg Mason and the ATP Tour Futures Tournaments.

From 2000-02, Modise was the interim head coach University of Louisiana at Lafayette. At UL, he helped the Lady Cajuns reach a Top-75 national ranking and led the team to its best finish in school history. During his tenure, he coached one of his women's players to a national ranking of No. 111, the highest ranking of any UL tennis student-athlete in school history.

During his collegiate playing days at Central Alabama Community College, Modise ranked among the Top-20 in the NJCAA singles rankings and was nominated as a NJCAA Player to Watch. He was also voted the Most Inspirational and the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. In the classroom, Modise was named an All-WAC scholar athlete before completing his associate's degree in 1997. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in December of 1999. In 2003, he completed his master's degree in human performance with a concentration in sport management from the University of New Orleans.

Originally from South Africa, Modise speaks four languages: English, Dutch, Tswana and Sotho

  • Kenyon College mens coach

    Andrew Carlson

    Camp Director

During the summer of 2018, Andrew Carlson was hired as Kenyon's senior assistant tennis coach. In 2020-21, he took on duties as acting men's tennis coach and, one year later, was hired as the head coach of both Kenyon's men's and women's programs. At the start of the 2024-25 campaign, Carlson's coaching duties shifted back to the men's side, focusing his efforts as the Owls head men's tennis coach. While still leading both the men's and women's programs in 2023-24, each Owls squad secured a top-25 national ranking, multiple All-NCAC awards, and ITA All-Academic Team recognition. On the men's side, Kenyon finished the season with a 14-8 overall record, including a 6-1 mark in NCAC play, and the Owls finished the year ranked No. 25 in the nation. The women's team doubled up for a second straight season, again winning the regular-season NCAC Championship and the NCAC Tournament Championship. The Owls won their first-round matchup in their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the season at No. 22 in the national standings.

    Andrew Carlson

    Camp Director

In the 2021-22 season, Carlson's first full season as head coach, the men's team posted a 13-8 overall record, was runner-up at the NCAC Tournament and finished the season with a No. 20 national rank and a No. 5 regional rank. On the women's side, the team was 13-10, also a runner-up at the NCAC Tournament, and gained a national rank of No. 27 and a regional rank of No. 5. Senior Daria Beshentseva was one of just 32 invited to play in the 2022 NCAA Division III Singles Championship and, alongside sophomore teammate Eleni Dakos, was part of just 16 duos that earned the right to play in the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship.

In 2022-23, his second at the helm, Carlson directed the Kenyon women to a 20-5 record, an NCAC title and a run into the third round of the NCAA DIII Tournament. Additionally, first-years Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl made it to the quarterfinal of the NCAA DIII Doubles Championship, while Lazaridou ventured all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA DIII Singles Championship. The women, as a team, ended the season with a No. 19 national rank. On the men's side, Carlson's 2022-23 squad went through an extremely difficult schedule, went 14-10 and earned a No. 23 national rank.

Before the pandemic limited action in the 2021 season, Carlson helped assist both teams to national rankings during the spring 2020 campaign, which was also affected by the pandemic. The men got off to a 7-3 start with wins over three ranked teams, while the women were 6-1.

Prior to that, in 2018-19, Carlson's first as an assistant at Kenyon, the men won the NCAC Championship for the 13th straight year and finished the season ranked No. 11 in the country. As for the women, they won their third-straight NCAC Championship, advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and ended the year ranked No. 14.

Carlson played on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour for four years (2001-2004) and earned world rankings as high as No. 825 in singles and No. 350 in doubles. Prior to his time as a pro, Carlson played at The Ohio State University, where he manned the No. 1 spot in both the Buckeyes' singles and doubles lineups. He was named Academic All-Big Ten for two seasons and during his junior campaign earned a No. 2 national rank in doubles play.

After his professional playing career, Carlson worked as a head tennis professional at clubs in North Carolina and Maryland. In 2008, he was hired as the director of tennis at the United States Naval Academy's Brigade Sports Complex. After five years there, he moved on to work as director of junior tennis at Athletic Performance Inc. in Gambrills, Maryland and then as assistant tennis director at Chartwell Country Club in Severna Park, Maryland.

He graduated from Ohio State in 2001 with a degree in business administration.
