5 Basketball Tryout Tips to Help you Stand Out

Tips to help you standout at basketball Tryouts

With basketball tryouts on the horizon, it is time to find ways to stand out and set yourself apart from the rest. First impressions are everything and can be the difference between making the team and being cut. Coaches will be looking at you both on and off the court, it is important to put your best foot forward all the time. Here are five ways to stand out at tryouts and make the team.

Arrive early. Coaches want players on their team who can commit to practices, games, and are excited to showcase their skill set. Arriving early will create a great first impression and will help set you apart from the other players.

Arrive in shape. If you are looking to make a competitive team, you need to prove to them why you deserve to be there. Use the offseason to get in shape and return to the gym with improved skills and better conditioning. This preparation and dedication can show your commitment to the team and your desire to progress in the sport.

Hustle. This is not the time to walk to the ball or lightly jog. Be aggressive and show the coaches that you want to be there. Bring the intensity to the court by being the first to finish sprints and get the ball. Make sure to communicate with your teammates and make your presence known as this will not only make you stand out but it will make you a more well-rounded player.

Coach-able. Learn from your mistakes. Following instructions and listening are important skills for all athletes to learn. Usually when a coach gives you feedback, they are doing this to help you, not to insult your abilities. The player who uses critique to enhance their skills will stay on the court more than someone who doesn’t.

Don’t play the mental game. Be present. Be a positive presence on and off the court and don't let any mistakes you may make affect your mental state. You have the next play to prove what you’ve got. Even the best players have off days and how you react to bad plays creates an opportunity for you to show your coach your resilience as an athlete and as a person.

At the end of the day this is just one tryout. Go out there, work hard, have fun, and be a good teammate. Showcase not only your skills, but your potential. Do your homework and come prepared. Tryouts can be nerve-racking, but if you listen to our tips above and go in with a positive attitude, you are sure to stand out.
