The Works Basketball Academy and Nike Basketball Camps Present the Kobe Step Back Drill

Equipment:

  • 1 chair
  • 1 basketball

Set Up:

  • Set up your chair just behind the FT line. Once you master that spot, move your chair to different positions

Keys:

  • Drop your hips, the higher you stand the harder it is!
  • Work hard to get the ball into your shooting pocket as your feet touch the ground
  • After your second dribble push off your front foot (using a cross step) and push your dribble out towards the chair
  • As your foot touches the ground, push back and hop at a 45* angle, land on 2 feet
  • Gather your balance and explode straight up to shoot

Kobe Fake Step Back

Equipment:

  • 3 chairs
  • 1 basketball

Set Up:

  • Set up your first chair at the top of the key
  • Place the next 2 chairs just inside and above the elbow

Keys:

  • Drop your hips, the higher you stand the harder it is!
  • After your second dribble push off your front foot (using a cross step) and push your dribble out towards the chair
  • As your foot touches the ground, push back and hop at a 45 angle, land on 2 feet
  • To sell the fake, get your eyes to the rim
  • Push off in either direction for a 1 dribble pull up

“Both of the moves covered above are great in setting up the defender and keeping them guessing. If the defender knows that you’re a pure shooter then the step back really helps to create space and give you just enough time to get your shot off. Once you set them up with the step back then you can incorporate the step back fake and cross over and this will force the defender to leave his/her feet and give you a clear lane to the hoop.”
