How to Tell If a Sports Camp Is High Quality: Answering Your Questions

How to Tell If a Sports Camp Is High Quality Answering Your Questions

Browsing sports camps can get overwhelming pretty quickly. There are lots of options out there, and every program promises to be the best. How do you know which camps will actually deliver?

The good news: there are clear signs that set the highest-quality sports camps apart. Once you know what to look for, it becomes a lot easier to compare programs and feel confident in your decision. In this post, we’re answering your top questions about how to assess camp quality.

What is a good coach-to-camper ratio at a sports camp?

A good coach-to-camper ratio at a sports camp is generally one coach for every 6–10 campers, depending on the sport. Smaller ratios mean more individual attention, faster skill development, and a safer environment overall. They also allow for focused breakout sessions to dig deep into specific positions or specialized skills.

This number is one of the most important indicators of camp quality. Think about it—if there's one coach for 25 campers, your child might only receive a few minutes of direct coaching per session. With a tighter ratio, they're getting consistent, personalized feedback throughout the day.

When evaluating a camp, don't be shy about asking directly: "What is your typical coach-to-camper ratio?" A quality program will have a clear answer. You can also ask about the staff-to-camper ratio more generally, which is important for safety and to ensure a smooth camp experience during meals, social time, and beyond.

>> What to look for:

  • Ratio of 1:6 to 1:10 for skill-focused camps
  • Additional support staff beyond just the head coach
  • Small-group breakouts on the camp schedule for extra individualized instruction

How can I tell if a sports camp has a quality curriculum?

A high-quality sports camp curriculum is structured, progressive, and age-appropriate. This means campers build on skills day over day, rather than running the same drills or scrimmages on repeat.

Ask for a sample daily schedule to give you a sense of the camp staff’s approach. A well-designed program will have a clear flow. For example, on a given day, you might see: warm-ups, skill stations, small-group instruction, scrimmages/gameplay, and cool-down or team reflection time. If a camp can't (or won't) share what a typical day looks like, that's a yellow flag.

Of course, strong curriculum design also means grouping campers by age and skill level, so your child isn't lost in a group that's too advanced or growing restless in one that feels too basic. (Read more about how we approach leveling instruction at sports camps.)

Appropriately leveled groups and a well-designed curriculum go hand-in-hand to create the perfect environment for challenge, fun, and major performance leaps!

>> What to look for:

  • Skills progress logically from kickoff to the final day
  • A balance of instruction, practice, and in-game application
  • Age- and skill-level groupings

What qualifications should sports camp coaches have?

At a minimum, sports camp coaches should have demonstrated experience in the sport and in working with youth athletes. Head coaches set the tone for the whole staff, so dig into their background. Look for coaches who have collegiate, professional, or other significant playing or coaching experience, have worked with young athletes, and have a track record in environments similar to camp.

As a bonus, keep an eye out for coaches who return year after year. This means they clearly believe in the program!

Beyond credentials, pay attention to coaching philosophy. Great coaches help campers succeed by creating a safe, supportive environment where young athletes can try new things without fear. Talk to other families who have attended or look for testimonials from previous campers’ parents. If they mention how their campers came home thrilled to share stories about everything they were learning, that’s a good indicator that the coach fostered a healthy, positive environment. (Young athletes are naturally excited about learning and growing—and the best coaches do a great job bringing this out!)

>> What to look for:

  • Collegiate, professional, or other significant coaching/playing experience
  • Expertise in working with young athletes
  • Glowing testimonials from prior years’ parents

What kind of feedback should a sports camp provide to my child?

A quality sports camp provides real-time, specific, constructive feedback, not just general praise. Coaches should be able to tell your child what they're doing well and exactly what to adjust. ("Good job" or "try again" is okay every once in a while, but only goes so far.) Ask about the kinds of cues that coaches give young athletes during drills and scrimmages to make sure they’re specific and actionable.

Beyond in-the-moment coaching, look for camps that offer ideas for improvement campers can use once they head home, too. This “homework” might be more formal, like a written summary or a skills evaluation. Or it could be advice from a coach that includes a few specific areas for improvement. This kind of feedback transforms a camp session into a long-term development tool your athlete can carry into their next season and beyond.

Of course, while you’re asking about this, make sure the camp's overall tone is positive and meets campers where they are. The best growth happens when athletes are working hard AND having fun—so make sure the camp shares this philosophy!

>> What to look for:

  • Specific, targeted feedback
  • Formal or informal take-home ideas for improvement
  • An emphasis on skill-building AND fun

Quick Guide: Determining Sports Camp Quality

Before signing up for a sports camp, make sure you look into:

  • Coach-to-camper ratio
  • Rough daily schedule/curriculum
  • Coaches' qualifications
  • Type of feedback your child will receive
  • How campers are grouped (age, skill level, etc.)
  • Testimonials from prior years’ parents

A camp that's confident in its quality will have this information available and be open to answering any of your follow-up questions.
