Coach Appenheimer’s advice on exploring

Head Cross Country Coach at Oberlin College, Ray Appenheimer likes to give his athletes the “do’s/don’ts” of best practices. Throughout this year, we plan to post his most famous “do’s/don’ts” and give our campers a bit more insight.

Do’s/Don’ts #3:

DO

Explore new places and run on different terrains - hills, grass, and trails.

DON’T

Run the same route or the same distance every day. This is a quick way to get bored and burn out this summer.

Nike Running Camps break-down of the DO!

Running is a great chance to see new things. In fact, it’s the only way explore certain places around you. Trails are provided everywhere that exclude automobiles, so runners get to appreciate more of the untouched land. Run with friends and don’t hesitate to stop and check out the beautiful landscape surrounding you.

Your workouts each day don’t have to be a competition to improve your time. A suggestion would be to one day set a goal for beating a certain time on a certain run. Then the next day go out and witness something new. That is the beauty of running, and it should never get boring. So get out there and have fun seeing new things while also getting a nice workout!
