Tennis Tip: Break the Rules and Hit Up the Line!

Tennis Tip

Coach Dan Batchelor, head tennis professional at Dwight Davis Tennis Center, says sometimes you have to break the rules and hit the ball up the line!

"Typically, when faced with a wide forehand, you are told to return the ball cross court. However, that shot plays right into most opponent's strength (typically their forehand). Sometimes it's good to break the rules, turn the tables and show your opponent something unexpected...hit a high, deep ball (with topspin) up the line to their backhand (typically their weakness). By doing this, you've now put your opponent in a difficult position...in order to avoid your forehand, they must return a high, deep backhand cross court (something most of us hate!).  The key here is to make sure you recover past the center line and look for a weaker ball that you can then attack and open up the court."

For more great tips and instruction from Coach Batchelor, check out the Nike Tennis Camps at Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center this summer.  With three weeks of Full Day and Half Day camps for ages 6-18 and all ability levels, there is a camp option for everyone!
