Tennis Tip: The Importance of Goal Setting Before and During a Match

Nike Tennis Camp Stanford 1620

Nike Tennis Camp Director and Head Men’s Tennis Coach at University of Minnesota, Geoff Young, stresses the importance of goal setting before and during a match:

"I often hear players come off the court and say, "I don't know what happened", or "I felt lost out there".  It can be frustrating feeling like you are absent of a sense of direction when it matters most. Especially if you feel you are working hard to improve your game.  I suggest picking three goals that are to a large degree within your control prior to stepping on the court to compete.  These goals should be chosen by the player because they are essential ingredients to performing at their best.  Throughout the match the player should try to stick to those goals and judge themselves more so on the execution of them rather than on the result of the match.  This will get the player on the right track towards developing their game. "
