    Jake Portugal was elevated to Head Coach of the San Diego Mesa Olympians in January of 2022 after serving as an assistant since the summer of 2014 and playing for the Olympians during the 2011 and 2012 season.

    In his 4 seasons as Head Coach, the Olympians have made tremendous progress rebuilding the program post the COVID-19 pandemic that cancelled both the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Having one First Team All-America selection, three All-SoCal, 14 Academic All-State selections, 14First Team All-Conference, 20 Honorable Mentions, and 34 student-athletes have received scholarships to four-year universities while earning multiple ABCA Team Academic Excellence Awards as of Summer 2025.

    The San Diego, California, native began his collegiate coaching in his hometown and alma mater, San Diego Mesa College, beginning in the Summer of 2014. He served as the catching and hitting coach while also taking on the duties as recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. Additionally, he has been an Adjunct Professor in the Exercise Science and Health Department since 2015 where he is active within the academic community, serving on multiple campus committees, and has attended multiple NCORE (National Conference on Race & Ethnicity) conventions on behalf of the college.

    During Coach Portugal’s stint as an assistant coach with the Olympians from 2015-2021, he coached five First Team All-American selections, eight All-SoCal, 15 First Team All-Conference, 22 Honorable Mentions, and 76 of the athletes coached and recruited by Portugal received scholarships at four-year universities, along with 5 players playing professionally,including freshman outfielder, Andrew McWilliams, who was drafted in the 34th round by the Detroit Tigers.

    During the 2018 season, Portugal moved to Chicago while his Wife finished Nursing school and took an assistant coaching position at storied division 1 program, University of Illinois-Chicago. Working alongside collegiate coaching staples: Mike Dee (32 seasons at college level), Sean McDermott (29 seasons), and John Flood (16 seasons), as well as renowned sports psychologist Rachel Webb who is currently an Assistant AD of Sports Psychology for University of Arizona. During the 2018 season, 6 student-athletes continued onto professional baseball: Ryan Campbell (4th round, Cincinnati Reds), Charlie Cerny (7th round, Oakland Athletics), Aaron Ackerman (26thround, Los Angeles Dodgers), Reid Birlingmair (28th round Oakland Athletics), Scott Ota (10thround, New York Mets), and Matt Botcher (Schaumburg Boomers). The 2018 Flames beat multiple power 5 opponents before falling in the conference championship game to conclude the season.

    Prior to coaching, Portugal was a part of two successful seasons at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., under head coach Matt Husted. As a catcher for the Thunder, Portugal helped the team to the CCIW Conference Tournament in 2013 and post the highest team fielding percentage in school history .973. In 2014 the pitching staff recorded the second-most strikeouts in school history, 270, and the second-most wins in school history, 23.

    Portugal began his collegiate playing career as a catcher at San Diego Mesa College where the Olympians made regional appearances in both 2011 and 2012 while also capturing the Pacific Coast Conference Championship in 2012 under the tutelage of Kevin Hazlett, Steven Sanchez (current PLNU assistant), TJ Merritt (Former USD & Indiana State assistant), and Mark Wanaka (Current LSU assistant).

    Jake’s Prep playing career at Mira Mesa High culminated with the Marauders winning 2 Eastern League Titles. The Marauders were led by longtime San Diego Prep Coach, Gene Watkins, Assistant Coach Sheldon Watkins (Former Indiana University Assistant, current Patrick Henry Head Coach), and Michael Ramazzotti (Former UCSD & USD Assistant, Current Houston Astros Coach).

    Portugal has spent the summers as a head coach for numerous summer leagues. In 2017-19, he led the San Diego Hawks to the California Coastal Collegiate League semi-finals each summer. From 2014-16 he coached the San Diego Samurai (a team comprised of Japanese & Japanese-American players) of the Western Baseball Association. In 2013 he managed the Lanier Vikings affiliate of RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities) in Austin, Texas. Coach Portugal also has national and international coaching and playing experience, working clinics, camps, and conventions in New York, Arizona, Texas, Hawaii, Florida, Oregon, Alaska, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Washington, as well as abroad in Panama, Mexico, Belize, and the Philippines.

    As a first-generation college student, Portugal earned his A.A. in Social Sciences from San Diego Mesa College in 2012, B.A. in Communications from Wheaton College in 2014, M.A. in Physical Education (Exercise Science Concentration) from Azusa Pacific University in 2015, and a Secondary Education Teaching Credential with endorsements in Health and Physical Education. Coach Portugal also serves as an adjunct professor at Point Loma Nazarene University in the Off-Season. Since Portugal became head coach, four assistant coaches at Mesa have been promoted with Trevin Esquerra now at Irvine Valley College, Esau “Chacho” Madrigal now the Head Coach at conference opponent Imperial Valley College, Jake Rico now at Point Loma Nazarene University, and Alejandro Duarte now at Carson-Newman University as well as Steve Pryor being awarded the illustrious ABCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2025, adding to Mesa College’s rich coaching lineage.

    The son of Ron and Stephanie Portugal, Jake has two younger brothers, Joseph and Nicholas. Joseph played collegiately and graduated from Mesa in 2016 before transferring to CSU East Bay, pitching for the Pioneers. Post-playing career, Joseph made coaching stops at San Diego Christian College and La Jolla Country Day. And Nicholas also graduated from Mesa College prior to earning his Bachelor and Doctoral Degrees at San Diego State University, now working for Rady’s Children’s Hospital.

    Jake and his wife Trisha are a foster family and live in San Diego County with their children and dogs.

    Eric Smelko begins his first season at Mesa in 2026 where he will serve as hitting and base coach. Prior to Mesa, he spent 1 season as an assistant coach at NCAA Powerhouse Point Loma Nazarene University. There he primarily worked with the team’s offense and catchers. The Sea Lions compiled a record of 39-18 record and advanced to a 4th straight NCAA West Regional.

    Prior to coaching at PLNU, Smelko finished his collegiate playing career at his alma mater, being named 2024 Division II All-West Region for the second consecutive season and 1st Team All PacWest during the Sea Lions season which ended with a trip to the College World Series after winning conference, regional, and super regional championships under the tutelage of highly-acclaimed Sea Lion Head Coach Justin James. Smelko had been the perfect leadoff man for the Sea Lions, ranking in the top-five in the conference in several statistical categories. The left fielder was second in the PacWest in both runs (64) and OPS (1.148), third in on-base % (.485), fourth in batting average (.392), slugging % (.663) and triples (3), as well as fifth in hits (82), doubles (15) and Home Runs (12) all while walking twice (32) as many times as striking out (16) on the season.

    Before his PLNU tenure, Eric attended California State University Dominguez Hills for 2 years where he was named 2023 Division II All-West Region, 2023 1st Team All CCAA, 2022 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, and 2022 1st Team All CCAA. The Toro’s reached new heights makingthe 2022 Conference championship game. During his 2 seasons stretch at CSUDH, Eric tallied 156 Hits, 28 doubles, and 17 homeruns. At the end of the 2023 season, Smelko was awarded the prestigious Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award in Academics, given to only 1 male student-athlete at the entire school per year. Eric played under Head Coach Tyler Wright.

    Eric spent the 2020-2021 seasons starting his collegiate paying career at Division I St. Mary’s College, where he was recruited by coach Eric Valenzuela and played for long-tenured Division I coaches Greg Moore, Jordan Twohig, and Riley Goulding. There he hit .253 to finish with the fifth-best batting average on the 2021 team where he began the season as the Gael's starting left fielder and named to the WCC All-Academic 1st Team.

    Smelko prepped at local Helix Carter. Eric was a 4-year Varsity starter as a Highlander. As a switch hitter and ambidextrous thrower, Smelko would pitch and play center field left-handed, while catching and playing the infield right-handed. The Highlanders won the competitiveGrossmont Hill League four times under the guidance of Head Coach Cole Holland and Legendary Pitching Coach Pat Hause, where the team appeared in the Open Division playoffs each year of those 4 years.

    The son of Mark and Christie Smelko, Eric was raised by extremely athletic, award winning coaches, and dedicated educators as parents. Mark played baseball at San Diego State and for three seasons with the California Angels minor league affiliates after being drafted in the 21stround of the 1981 MLB Draft. He then coached baseball and taught physical education at Monte Vista High School from 1991-2000, reaching San Diego Section CIF championships in 1993, 1998, and 2000. Christie Smelko was a swimmer and volleyball player at Poway and coached both sports at Monte Vista where she taught oceanography, chemistry, and AP environmental science.

    Eric earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History at CSU Dominguez Hills and Master’s Degree in Exercise Science at PLNU.

    Isaiah Nuñez enters his third year as Pitching Coach for the Olympians as they prepare for the 2026 season. Each season as a Pitching Coach at San Diego Mesa has resulted in improvements all across the board. The team won 12 more games from before Nunez arrival to now. The Olympian Pitching staff lowered its ERA from 6.92 to 4.63, WHIP from 1.93 to 1.50, improved K/9 from 6.95 to 8.63, and decreased Home Runs allowed from 35 to 20. Nunez first year resulted in one starting pitcher earning first team all-conference, and 4 others as Honorable Mention.

    Second year resulted in one starting Pitcher earning ALL-Region and 1st team all-conference accolades, as well as an additional 2 pitchers earning Honorable Mention. In addition to his duties as pitching coach, Nunez also serves the team as Strength and Conditioning Coach, Academic Retention Technician, and Adjunct Professor in the Exercise Science department.

    Prior to joining the Olympians, Nuñez coached at NCAA Division 2 Power Lenoir-Rhyne University, helping the bears win over 80 games in his 2 seasons from 2022-2023. At Lenoir-Rhyne Isaiah worked with some extremely driven baseball minds. Chris Ramirez is now the Head Coach at Southern Indiana (D1), Derek Beasley became Pitching Coach at Western Carolina (D1) & now Southern Indiana (D1), Matt Risdon is now assistant coach at University of New Mexico (D1), Brandon Krennrich is now an Assistant Coach at Southern Indiana (D1), Micah Baumfeld now Pitching Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (D2), and Adam Skonieczki is the currentHead Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (D2). During his tenure at LR, the Bears pitching staff compiled many top-10 school records including strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, and wins. Isaiah helped mentor a dozen All-Conference, All-Academic, and All-Region players, including San Diego Padres 2024 9th Round Draft Pick Zach Evans.

    Before joining the Bears staff, Nuñez coached at his alma mater Sacramento City College from2020-2021, under the tutelage of future Hall of Fame California Community College baseball coaches Derek Sullivan and renowned pitching coach Deskaheh Bomberry.

    Nuñez also has impressive experience in the private sector as a performance throwing trainer at Optimum Athletes (founded by Major Leaguer Ryan Mattheus) from 2019-2021, at Tread Athletics (founded by Professional Pitching Coach Ben Brewster) during the summer of 2022, and at Union Baseball Systems (Founded by Chicago Cubs Director of Innovation Bobby Basham) from Fall 2023-Present.

    Prior to coaching, Nuñez compiled an excellent playing career as a starting and high leverage relief pitcher. Nunez started 15 games in his senior season at Division 1 Cal State Northridge. Isaiah became the first Matador since 2002 to win eight games in a season, finished with an 8-4 record with 66 strikeouts and a 3.09 ERA in 93.1 innings of work, while earning All-Big West Honorable Mention and Big West All-Academic Team honors. During his senior campaign, Nunez ranked fifth in the Big West in innings pitched, sixth in wins and ninth in ERA and strikeouts. Isaiah also ranked 10th in all of division 1 baseball in walks allowed per nine innings (1.25). As a junior, Nunez appeared in 23 games and made nine starts.

    Before arriving at CSUN, Nunez got his collegiate start at Sacramento City College. Nunez played two seasons with the Panthers and posted a career 2.33 ERA to go along with a 15-3 record and 121 strikeouts over 154.1 innings.

    A native of Sacramento, CA… Isaiah prepped at local Inderkum High School. Nunez received his Associate’s Degree at Sacramento City College, Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science at Cal State Northridge, and Master’s Degree at Lenoir-Rhyne.

    Coach Chase Bowen joined the Mesa College baseball staff in the fall of 2025 and currently serves as the Assistant Pitching and Bullpen Coach. He brings a unique blend of competitive playing experience, player-development knowledge, and military leadership to the Olympians’ pitching staff.

    Before arriving at Mesa, Bowen spent six years in the United States Navy, where he developed the discipline, communication skills, and leadership qualities that shape his coaching style today. He also gained coaching experience with the San Diego Bombers, working with pitchers across multiple collegiate levels.

    During his playing career at Orange County Community College, Bowen served as the team’s closer as a freshman. Although injuries ultimately ended his playing career and led him to military service, he continued to pursue his passion for the game through coaching.

    Bowen has called San Diego home for the past decade. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports and Exercise Science from Point Loma Nazarene University, as well as an associate degree in Business Management from National University.

    Coach Bowen, his wife, a baseball loving son reside in Santee, California.

MEDICAL PROTOCOL

Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

TRAVEL

Nike Baseball Camps does not provide transportation from airports, train stations or bus depots. If you have a child flying to camp, please arrange a shuttle or taxi service.

TEAM/GROUP DISCOUNT

If you have a team or group of 5 or more campers registering for the same camp, each camper may be eligible for a discount. To receive the group discount, please have someone email US Sports Camps at [email protected] with the following information: Camp name, list of camper names, and the number of campers. We will respond with a unique discount code for everyone in the group to use during online registration. *Note: Discount amounts vary by program, so please reach out for more details.
