  • My child really loved participating on a college campus and the U of La Verne facilities were top notch. I really appreciated the opportunities for breaks/lunch in an air conditioned environment. I also really liked the thoughtfulness of arranging the schedule to have drills during the cooler morning hours and covered hitting cages in the hotter afternoon hours. Just can't say enough about this camp and Director: FANTASTIC and we really appreciated being a part of this camp
  • My son had a blast every single day. He participated in a baseball camp last summer that he hated, during which he felt criticized by coaches. However, he had nothing but glowing things to say about this camp experience. I know he worked on skills during the day, but more importantly, he had fun and felt supported during it!
  • Overall it has been a positive and fun experience for my son. This speaks to the quality of coaching and environment they create.
  • Camp director and staff were exceptionally positive and present. Clear focus on fun. My son had a blast.
  • Best camp ever!

    Camp Director

Winterburn has guided the Leos to five SCIAC titles. La Verne earned back-to-back SCIAC Conference titles in 2004 and 2005 and has finished with a Top 20 national ranking on many occasions. Winterburn and the Leos captured the league crown again in 2008 before notching his fourth SCIAC title in 2012 and fifth in 2018.

The 2012 SCIAC Championship squad was the 20th in the history of La Verne baseball. The Leopards returned to the NCAA National Championship tournament in 2015 after winning the program's first-ever SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship.

Winterburn has coached three SCIAC Players of the Year in outfielder James Ortega (2004), pitcher Scott Lindeen (2005) and catcher/designated hitter Scott Marcus (2008). All went on to earn All-America recognition. Also, Coach Winterburn has had 27 All West Region representatives in his tenure.

Additionally, centerfielder Jacob Ludvik earned All-America status and the Gold Glove Award in 2012. In 2014, Winterburn coached his son, Joe, to an All-America Award and Ben White was named a 2015 Gold Glove Award recipient at first base.

Scott Lindeen was drafted in the 26th round by the then-Florida Marlins in 2005 and Joe Winterburn was picked in the 40th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2014. There have been 4 other players who have gone on to play professional baseball in his tenure. Outside of La Verne, Coach Winterburn spent two seasons in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League where he was on a staff that coached 14 future big league players and where his pitching staff was at the top of the league in his 2nd season.

Winterburn's plan has always been to graduate players on time so they can pursue their life’s work, and utilize the sport of college baseball to help with life’s most important lessons. He is very proud of the long list of alums from the University of La Verne Baseball program.

“I’m proud of all of our alums, not just the ones who played for me. La Verne has always been a special place, and it certainly has been special for me. Our goal has been really consistent; promote an environment that is rich in talent and quality individuals, and to work really hard at the things that are in front of us,” said Coach Winterburn.

On the sports administration side, Winterburn guided the ULV Athletics Department as the Director of Athletics from 2018-2022. He provided strength and leadership, while sucessfully navigating the department through the initital stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2022, Winterburn made the choice to strictly focus on the baseball program, and stepped away from his position as Director.

Winterburn believes in the "journey", the work and respect that is bred through believing and in executing what the group is trying to accomplish. Now in his 32nd straight year of collegiate coaching, Winterburn continues his personal life’s work in the field of collegiate athletics.
