Ashley Langford

Ashley Langford was appointed the 10th head coach in Stony Brook women’s basketball history on April 28, 2021. In her first season on Long Island, she led the Seawolves to a 23-6, 14-4 record. The 23 wins were tied for the fourth-most in a season in program history and were the most by a first-year head coach in program history.

Langford guided the Seawolves to an at-large berth into the WNIT, which marked its sixth appearance in a national postseason tournament and third in the WNIT during the program’s Division I era.

In her first season at the helm, Stony Brook picked up marquee wins over two Power Five opponents in Rutgers (53-44 on Nov. 16) and Washington State (69-62 on Dec. 19). The wins were the third and fourth over Power Five opponents in program history and it was the first time that the Seawolves beat two Power Five opponents in the same season.

The Seawolves earned votes in WBCA Top 25 and were ranked as high as No. 7 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 during the stellar 2021-22 campaign.

Under Langford’s tutelage, Stony Brook’s offensive output increased by nearly nine points per game and the team had four student-athletes scoring in double figures and seven student-athletes increased their scoring from a season ago.

Langford had a pair of student-athletes earn All-Conference honors in her first season as India Pagan and Anastasia Warren took home All-Conference recognition. Warren claimed All-Conference First Team honors, while Pagan was tabbed to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team. Both Pagan (Second Team) and Warren (Third Team) were also recognized by the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA).

In March, Langford was selected to the Advancement of Blacks In Sports (ABIS) Mid-Major Head Coaches Watch List. She was one of 11 women’s basketball head coaches in the nation to be tabbed to the Watch List.

In addition to their tremendous success on the court, Stony Brook also made strides in the classroom. The team accomplished an overall GPA of 3.185 for the 2021-22 academic year and received WBCA Academic Top 25 Special Mention.

Before coming to Long Island, Langford spent four seasons at James Madison. While at JMU, Langford helped lead a team that produced a 91-31 overall and 58-11 conference record as well as three CAA regular season titles.

Prior to the 2020-21 season at JMU, Langford was elevated from assistant coach to associate head coach. Langford recruited and coached 14 CAA All-Conference selections, one Player of the Year, two Rookies of the Year, one two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and the 28thoverall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft.

Over the course of her coaching career, she has coached two WNBA Draft picks, 10 players playing professionally overseas, one Olympian, and three players competing for Puerto Rican Jr. National Team.

She also has served as an assistant coach at Old Dominion, Navy, Bucknell, and Denver.

Langford earned a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from Tulane in 2009 and an MBA from Auburn in 2011.

Before her coaching career began, Langford was a standout point guard at Tulane from 2005-09. She remains the Green Wave’s career leader in assists (722) and assists per game (6.0). She graduated as the program’s leader in games started (119) and minutes played (4,162), and currently ranks second in those categories.

She was Conference USA’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior in addition to a three-time All-Conference selection. Langford was a member of C-USA’s All-Freshman Team in 2006.

Langford scored 1,047 points during her collegiate career and was inducted into the school’s athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
