Bob Hochstadter Bio

Coach Hochstadter is currently the owner and manager of the Nellie Gail Ranch Tennis Club in Laguna Hills, where he has been for over 20 years.

What Bob is most proud of is the accomplishments of the Nellie Gail Women’s and Men’s league tennis. Over the past several years, Nellie Gail Ladies’ teams have won over 40 titles, and combined our men and women have won 22 USTA Sectional Championships. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern California Tennis Association. Bob also served as the initial President of the Orange County Community Tennis Association.

Bob was born in New York City in February 1951. His family moved to Woodland Hills, California in 1960 where Bob attended elementary through high school. He played tennis and basketball for Taft High School and received All League honors in both sports. Next stop was Pierce Junior College, where he competed for legendary coach Paul Xanthos, and his tennis game began to flourish. He received a full tennis scholarship to East Texas State University where the team won the 1972 NAIA National Championship. Bob teamed with Harry Fritz to win the national doubles title that year, and then came back in 1973 to win the national singles title. He was named First Team All-American both years.

In 1975, Bob took the job as Head Tennis Pro at the Warner Center Racquet Club in Woodland Hills. With 24 courts, the Warner Center was the largest facility in Southern California at the time. During his tenure there, Bob was building a reputation for his ability to work with junior players. In 1980, he became the General Manager of Thousand Oaks Racquet Club. Within a year, Bob had over 18 juniors ranked in the top 20 of their respective age brackets in Southern California. His top student, Barbara Gerken, got to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open as a 17-year-old in 1981. To this day, Barbara holds the record for the furthest any woman qualifier has gone in the history of the U.S. Open.

In 1984, Bob took the position of Director of Tennis at Laguna Niguel Racquet Club. Upon his arrival, he brought along a great junior program to the club. Once again, he had over 15 students in Orange County ranked at the top of their age groups. His top student at the time, Debbie Graham, was not only the top 18-year-old in the country, but received a full scholarship to Stanford. She went on to win the NCAA singles and doubles championships. She continued on to a great professional career, unfortunately cut short by injuries. Bob has coached over 60 players who have received full tennis scholarships to universities around the country. In 1989, he proved he still had game left in him, when he teamed with longtime partner Dick Miller to become the #1 ranked team in Men’s 35 Doubles in Southern California.
