CJ Perry

CJ Perry is heading into his fifth season as the Pirate baseball coach in 2023. Perry was selected as the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in only his second season as head coach. A Spokane native, Perry graduated from Whitworth with a Kinesiology degree and Secondary Education Certification in 2012.

Perry, now 65-68 overall, led Whitworth to the 2019 NWC regular season title with a 19-5 record, garnering the NWC Coach of the Year nod. The Pirates finished 27-15 overall after a 4-9 start and finished among the top five schools in all of NCAA Division III in team fielding percentage (.975) and in doubles (106). Perry guided the Pirates to a record of 17-20 in 2018, his first season at the helm and the Bucs were off to a strong 11-5 start in 2020 before the schedule was cancelled by Covid. Two of his players were selected in the MLB draft in 2018: Hugh Smith in the sixth round by the Detroit Tigers and Joel Condreay in the 31st round by the Colorado Rockies. Smith was selected as the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Year, while Condreay was named a second team Academic All-American and first team All-NWC honoree.

Perry previously served as the Pitching, Outfield and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Pirates and assisted with all recruiting for four seasons. In 2015 he received his CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) certification through NSCA.

In 2016 Perry's pitching staff led all of Division III baseball in walks allowed per nine innings (2.07) and freshman Hugh Smith earned first team All-NWC and ABCA All-West Region honors. Perry's 2016 staff posted Whitworth's lowest ERA (3.95) since joining the Division III level, eclipsing their previous best of 4.19 in 2015.

In 2015 he helped coach Dan Scheibe to an All-NWC season. Scheibe finished 9-3 with a 2.10 ERA, leading the NWC with 104 strikeouts. Scheibe threw a no-hitter against nationally-ranked Linfield in the opening game of the inaugural NWC Tournament, the first nine-inning no-hitter in Whitworth's metal bat era.

In 2009 he played summer baseball as a member of the Spokane Riverhawks of the West Coast League and served as the assistant coach for the Spokane Bandits AAA American Legion team. In the summer of 2011, Perry played for the Atwater Aviators of Merced County and helped pitch the Aviators to a second place finish in the Far West Collegiate Baseball League. During Perry’s senior year at Whitworth he was in the starting rotation for their NCAA Regional Championship team and was named All-NWC honorable mention as a starting pitcher.

Perry also serves as the Pitching Coordinator for the Club Spokane Dodgers organization.

Perry was a two time All-GSL Baseball selection at Gonzaga Prep and played for the Club Spokane Dodgers for two years in the summer while at G-Prep. CJ is married to his wife Alexis.
