Cal Volleyball Camps Matt Mcshane

Matt McShane was named the sixth head coach in Cal volleyball history on May 9, 2017.

McShane took the helm of the program after one season as the Golden Bears’ associate head coach when Rich Feller retired after 18 seasons in Berkeley. He had previously served as an assistant coach at Cal from 2005-09.

“We are thrilled to have Matt as the new leader of our volleyball program,” Cal athletic director Mike Williams said. “Matt has a true passion for Cal, and his ability to train and teach is at the very top of the collegiate game. He’s competitive, he’s driven, and he understands Cal. He’s a perfect fit.”

During McShane’s first stint as an assistant coach in Berkeley, the Bears enjoyed arguably the most successful stretch in program history. With McShane’s help, Cal advanced to its first-ever NCAA Final Four in 2007 and qualified for two other NCAA Regional Finals. During his five years as an assistant, the Golden Bears advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament every year and compiled a record of 114-47.

“I am honored, thrilled and excited, but at the same time it’s a little daunting having to follow Rich,” McShane said. “Rich has absolutely been a legend of Cal Athletics. It’s Cal. Only the best of the best students, best of the best teachers and best of the best coaches come here.”

McShane left Cal the first time to become the head coach at Air Force, where the program improved on its win total in four consecutive years. Air Force’s recruiting classes received two high honorable mention accolades by PrepVolleyball.com during his tenure, and his teams produced 22 Mountain West All-Academic selections.

Before his first stint in Berkeley, McShane spent four years as an assistant coach at Utah, where in 2004 he helped the Utes capture a share of their first-ever Mountain West Conference championship.

From 1987-2000, McShane was an associate head coach at New Mexico. During his time there, the Lobos qualified for the NCAA Tournament six times and two conference championships.

McShane also served as an assistant coach at BYU from 1980-82 and has extensive experience on staff with the United States National Team program.

As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, McShane played on the only intercollegiate team to win the USAV Open National Championship. The UCSB teams finished second in the NCAA Championships in 1975 and 1975 and placed third in the NCAA Regional Championships in 1976. He was named an All-American in 1974.

McShane earned his bachelor’s degree from UCSB in 1977 and his master’s degree from BYU in 1982. While at BYU, he played on the men’s club team that finished third at the USAV Open National Championship in 1981.

McShane lives in the East Bay with his wife, Dana.
