Matt Barreau

Matthew Barreau was named the head coach of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in summer 2019. He enters his fourth season leading the program in 2022.

In his first three seasons, the Pios experienced immense improvements including a year-over-year jump from last to third place in the team standings for both the men's and women's teams at the Northwest Conference Championships.

The Pios squads repeated their third place finishes in 2021. The Pioneers have also ascended to the top 10 of the region for both squads in back-to-back years for the first time in over a decade, with the men placing 5th in 2021. In just three years, Barreau has coached L&C Athletes to 30 school records and 120 All-Time Top 10 marks. His athletes have also won 4 individual Conference Championships, and amassed 14 All-Conference honors and 18 All-Region honors. Four L&C athletes have qualified for the National Championships since Barreau began leading the Pios.

A coach with over 50 national qualifiers, nearly 100 conference champions and 300 all-conference selections over the last eight seasons, Barreau joined the Pioneers following eight years coaching other NCAA Division III institutions. Over his last two seasons at Coe in Iowa, Barreau produced 10 all-conference selections and two new school records. He also coached the school's first-ever all-conference track and field selection in the 10,000 meters.

In all, Barreau has directly coached seven All-Americans and overseen student-athletes set 70 school records across all divisions of the NCAA. Prior to Coe, Barreau was the head coach at Christopher Newport in Virginia and was named the regional coach of the year four times. With 47 national qualifiers and 27 conference records, Barreau was an eight-time conference coach of the year.

Originally from Oregon, Barreau was an assistant coach at Portland State from 2005-08 followed by a year at Concordia. At PSU, his student-athletes broke 27 school records including 12 freshman marks. The Vikings also had their first-ever all-conference distance runners since entering NCAA Division I. For Concordia, Barreau assisted both teams that achieved their highest finish at nationals with the men's team placing among the top 10.

Before coaching in Portland, Barreau was an assistant coach at Adams State in Colorado and his alma mater, Western Oregon. He also spent six years coaching high schools in Arizona and Oregon.

In addition to his coaching accolades, Barreau is highly involved on cross country committees nationwide. Currently, he is the Vice President of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III Executive Committee.
