NIKE US Sports Camps Colorado Director Offers Advice On Staying Focused For NIKE Softball Camps

Fielding Coaching Tip

NIKE Softball Camps Director Tonya Cavallaro emphasizes the importance of preparing mentally for each play and just how much staying focused can improve every softball player’s fielding ability.

San Rafael, CA January 25, 2013 - NIKE Softball Camps Director Tonya Cavallaro emphasizes the importance of preparing mentally for each play and just how much staying focused can improve every softball player’s fielding ability.

“Focus is a key part of the game of softball both defensively and offensively.  Many sports are primarily reactive; in this game, you have time in between play to prepare mentally and perform proactively.  From an offensive perspective, it is important to expect that the ball is coming to you upon contact, and think about what you are going to do with it once you get it.  If you want to start to become a proactive fielder, start to run through these factors with each batter: number of outs, base runner/s location, where the batter hits, and pitching count at the plate.  Thinking about these factors at each at bat keeps you as a fielder focused and prepared to make a quick decision,” says Cavallaro. “ It may be a lot to think about at first but it will become second nature as you practice it. You will know where you are going to throw the ball and look forward to fielding it. As your confidence grows, proactive focus will minimize fumbling.  You will always be ready to field the ball and choose which play is best to make."

Tonya Cavallaro is a former division 1 softball pitcher who comes from a multi-sport background. Her instructing/coaching experience began as a sailing instructor for a summer, and then as the Tennis Director at Camp Alvernia for 2 summers. The Cherry Creek High School Softball Program brought her on in 2012 as the Assistant JV coach.  She worked with a young team to develop strong basic skills.  She attributes her athletic success to the ability to focus, determination to master fundamentals, discipline in strength & conditioning exercise program, and drive to be the best she could be.
