Getting to Know: Nelson Banes, Director of Tennis at Enchantment Resort
Nelson Banes is the Director of Tennis at Enchantment Resort. Nelson is a former NCAA All-American and ATP Professional. Recognized as one of the country’s most prominent coaches, he has coached on both the ATP and WTA tours.
How many years have you been directing camp?
I started directing camps 25 years ago.
Favorite camp drill?
My favorite camp was the first Nike Camp I did in 1998 in Fort Collins, Colorado. It brought out a lot of new players to our sport who continued to play long after the camps were over. My favorite drill is the “6 Ball Drill”. It incorporates all the shots a player may hit in any given point. Starting with a forehand followed by a backhand, approach shot, forehand and backhand volley and an overhead. It help student learn how a point comes together and what it takes to win one!
Why did you get in to coaching?
Even when I was playing professional tennis I always knew I would become a coach. I enjoy working with players as individuals and customize a realistic blueprint to get the most out of each and every player’s game.
What's in your bag?
Now that I’m coaching more than I’m competing these days my bag is set up to have everything I need to help the players I coach. I still carry at least three freshly strung racquets in addition to new grip tape. As a coach I like to carry a few extra sets of string that my players use along with a first-aid kit, hydrating drinks and snacks.
If you could “borrow” one stroke from a current pro player, who would it be and why?
I would love to have Rodger Federer’s serve! His technique is flawless and his ability to move it around the box with different spins is unmatched.
Go to Nike product?
My go-to Nike product has always been the Air-Max Cage. By far the most comfortable tennis shoe I have ever worn.
