Getting to Know: Sherri Stephens, Head Women’s Tennis Coach at University of San Diego
Sherri Stephens has been the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at USD since 1984 and has since transitioned her teams into a national NCAA Division I contending program. She grew up in Arizona where she was a nationally ranked junior player before competing at the University of Arizona. We sat down with Coach Stephens recently to chat about her experience with camps. In the spirit of Nike Tennis Camps, she answered each both SERIOUS. and FUN. Thanks Sherri!
How many years have you been directing camp?
Serious: Too many (32)
Fun: Not enough (love it)
Favorite camp drill?
Serious: Anything worth points and fast paced
Fun: Rip your Face off (don't worry it's safe )
Why did you get in to coaching?
Serious: Passionate about tennis/teaching!
Fun: Work with happy student-athletes everyday
What's in your bag?
Serious: Lots of water
Fun: Several colors of Nike free shoes (like 6 pairs)
What can you be heard saying at camp?
Serious: "move, move, move!"
Fun: "it's lunch time!"
If you could “borrow” one stroke from a current pro player, who would it be and why?
Serious: Rafa's inside out lefty forehand
Fun: Federer's tweener
