Head Women's Soccer Coach - Cal Maritime Emily Scheese
The 2021 season is Emily Scheese's fifth as the head coach for Cal Maritime's women's soccer program. Scheese arrived to campus from UC Santa Cruz where she was the Division III Association of Independents’ Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2016. Before she was named head coach in 2012, a role she held until 2017, she spent two seasons as the Banana Slugs' assistant coach.View Emily's Bio ⟩
Under her tutelage, UCSC won the Great South Athletic Conference in 2015 and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament six times. Success on the field also carried over to the classroom since UC Santa Cruz earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Scholar Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.35 — the highest in the UC system from 2012 to 2016.
Scheese’s UC Santa Cruz teams featured the Association of D-III Independents Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2016, a GSAC Tournament MVP and four All-Tournament Team selections in 2015. Two NSCAA D-III All-West Region Team, 10 NSCAA D-III Scholar All-West Region Team and six Great South Athletic Conference All-Scholar Team selections flourished under her leadership.
In addition to coaching Global Premier Soccer’s Almaden FC, she served as Nike Soccer’s US Sports Camps co-director from 2012-2017; Scheese also played a key role with Aptos Soccer Club's community outreach programs and initiatives during her tenure with the south Santa Cruz County organization.
Hailling from Torrance, California, Scheese attended Bishop Montgomery High School and led the girls' soccer team to a CIF championship in 1994. Two years later, she earned Most Valuable Defensive Player and All-Del Rey League First Team honors as a senior.
Scheese continued her athletic and academic career at UC San Diego; in addition to earning a degree in literature and minoring in critical gender studies, she received a departmental award for the best senior honors thesis in 2000. On the field, she led the Tritons to three NCAA Division III national titles and is a key reason why they posted a combined record of 72-7-3 throughout her college career..
While at UC Santa Cruz, Scheese earned a Ph.D. in literature in 2012 and taught several postcolonial literature, women's caribbean literature, rhetoric and composition courses for its writing department.
Men's Head Soccer Coach - Cal Maritime Mike Carvalho
Former Saint Patrick-Saint Vincent High School JV head coach, varsity assistant coach for the Bruins, and Cal Maritime women's soccer assistant coach Mike Carvalho became men's soccer's head coach in October, 2020.View Mike's Bio ⟩
The 2022-23 season is Carvalho's third leading Cal Maritime's men's soccer program.
Before he entered his first season as head coach, Carvalho noted the obstacles and challenges of developing a new program, which prepped him for this new role, and highlighted his experience working alongside Coach Scheese since the program's inaugural season in 2018.
"Emily has been a great mentor, she allowed me the opportunity to develop the women's program with her. From the beginning, she encouraged my participation in program planning and coaching; I still remember our first practice and how excited the players and coaches were to be part of the school's first women's soccer team.
Carvalho added, "My coaching philosophy includes a lot of knowledge, ideas and principles learned from Coach Scheese."
"I am excited to see Mike officially on staff as men's soccer's head coach," said Scheese. "He has already proven his dedication to the growth of our women's soccer program by his contributions of time, soccer knowledge, and I look forward to what the men's program will accomplish with a mentor that keeps each cadet at the forefront of why we coach here. I'm glad we will collaborate to see both teams improve and grow."
Carvalho has coached hundreds of players in youth and adult competitive soccer, working with over 30 club and high school teams while winning three state cups and several league championships. throughout his career.
"Players need to understand not only the roles and responsibilities of each position," explained Carvalho, "but how all the positions can work together to defend against opponent attacks and how to transition into an attack that creates scoring opportunities."
The Benecia resident added, "I want to develop a program where I can build on the talents and skills of our new and returning players by building a structured soccer program. I hope to accomplish this by implementing a methodology of predictive play, constant player communication on and off the field, and use the best practices in technical, tactical, and systemic soccer training. I believe every player needs to be a student of the game.
"As head coach, I am looking forward to leading this fine group of cadets and teaching our players a game I truly love and appreciate."
Carvalho, a Southern Illinois University-Carbondale alum, obtained all three United Soccer Coach Credentials — NSCAA National Diploma, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and NSCAA Premier Diploma — in addition to a Master Coach Diploma, the highest United Soccer Coaches certification. Licensed by the U.S. Soccer Federation as a referee since 2007, he also completed coursework towards his Master's in Education at Chapman University.
Outside of his coaching duties and responsibilities, Carvalho manages the technology infrastructure team at AC Transit in Oakland.
