  • Brian Quinn

    Brian Quinn

Head Men's Soccer Coach at University of San Diego

Brian Quinn just completed his eighth season as head coach of the San Diego men’s soccer team in 2025, and few men have impacted the sport in the city more than Quinn.

    Brian Quinn

    Brian Quinn

Head Men's Soccer Coach at University of San Diego

He's led the Torero program to four consecutive West Coast Conference titles dating back to the 2022 season, which included a trip to Sweet Sixteen and two NCAA Tournament home games in 2024.

The 2025 Toreros posted another double digit win campaign in route to a fourth straight WCC title and the ninth overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Quinn picked up his third WCC Coach of the Year award, while student-athletes Lucca Adams (Goalkeeper of the Year) and Ethan Warne (Defender of the Year) earned more conference-wide hardware. Three USD student-athletes (Adams, Iain Wagner and Warne) were named to the All-WCC First Team, another trio were named to the All-WCC Second Team (Cesar Bahena, Noah James and Steven Ramirez) and three more were named All-WCC Honorable Mentions (Vicente Ayala, Josh Martinez and Owen Walz). Capping off Adams' tremendous debut season in goal he was also named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.

USD dominated their opponents throughout the 2024 campaign as they posted a 15-3-2 record and made their way to the #3 ranking in the nation and finished the season at #10 overall nationally. Quinn earned his second WCC Coach of the Year, while coaching the WCC Goalkeeper of the Year (Donovan Parisian), Four All-WCC First Team selections (Cesar Bahena, Samy Kanaan, Parisian and Ethan Warne), All-WCC Second Team pick (Jack Sandmeyer), two All-WCC Freshmen (Mathias Bauer and Luca Fava) and a pair of All-WCC Honorable Mentions (Steven Ramirez and Oliver Rhoades).

Quinn orchestrated one of the best seasons in program history in 2023. After the Toreros were selected to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, USD went a perfect 6-0-1 in conference play to secure the WCC Championship. He was named WCC Coach of the Year for those efforts, and guided USD to its first NCAA appearance since 2014. San Diego lost just twice in its last 15 matches (8-2-5), and finished undefeated in WCC play for just the second time in program history (first since 2000). The Toreros outscored opponents 17-4 in WCC play. Quinn guided the team to two All-Region selections, the WCC Defender of the Year, the WCC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, the WCC Freshman of the Year, and 13 total All-WCC selections. Not surprisingly, USD earned United Soccer Coaches West Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Quinn moved to the United States in 1981 to play for the outdoor Los Angeles Aztecs, but it was in San Diego where he would soon make a significant mark. Quinn played on eight straight San Diego Sockers indoor championship teams when that collection of international personalities regularly filled the old San Diego Sports Arena.

Quinn earned his U.S. citizenship, shifted his playing focus to the outdoors and earned 48 caps for the United States national team. In all, Quinn played 16 professional seasons.

His playing days done, Quinn coached professionally in the Major Soccer League and locally at the highest youth levels. As the girls varsity coach at The Bishop’s Academy, Quinn led the Knights to San Diego Section high school titles.

Quinn spent 11 seasons as Seamus McFadden’s assistant at San Diego before being named the Toreros’ head coach in 2018. The two men switched roles with McFadden, San Diego’s head coach the previous 39 years, becoming Quinn’s assistant.

He carries a deep belief in the university’s mission to develop students who serve in the community. When he was telling the team about a volunteer program working with students at nearby Montgomery Junior High, Quinn grabbed his USD shirt and told his players, “It’s all about the shirt and how we wear the shirt!”

“It’s a place where I feel like being a coach it’s more like a vocation,” Quinn said. “I want to leave USD a better place than when I started. You want to be influential with kids. Sometimes it’s with conversation. Sometimes it’s through action.”

Quinn doesn’t just tell his players how to play the game. He steps in and shows them.

"That's the love of the game," said former Toreros striker Miguel Berry. "Where you just have to play."

In 1997, Quinn became the youngest coach in Major Soccer League history. In 2013, he was inducted into the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame and the Breitbard Hall of Fame, which honors San Diego sports.

Quinn is married to Sharon and the couple has six children – Nicola, Damien, Danielle, Caitlin, Sinead and Aodhan. They have 15 grandchildren - Raelyn, Tanner, Declan, Braeden, Everly, Kenzie, Nash, Gabriella, Makayla, Sophie, Amaya, Kyleigh, Brendan, Jovi and Lochlann..

    Mike "Nico" Nicholson

Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at University of San Diego

In his USD tenure, he has helped the Toreros win six WCC championships and reach the NCAA Tournament five times.

During Nicholson's time with the Toreros he has helped establish the program's winning culture which included the program's third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024. San Diego reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the 2012 season as the Toreros defeated UC Davis and Duke in postseason play. As the team collected 15 wins in 2024, the Toreros went 7-1 in conference play for their third straight West Coast Conference title. Nicholson was a key piece leading the roster as USD earned the conference's Goalkeeper of the Year, four All-WCC First Team picks, an All-WCC Second Team selection, two All-WCC Honorable Mentions and a pair of All-WCC Freshmen Team picks.

Nicholson helped orchestrated one of the best seasons in program history in 2023. After the Toreros were selected to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, USD went a perfect 6-0-1 in conference play to secure the WCC Championship and advance to its first NCAA appearance since 2014. San Diego lost just twice in its last 15 matches (8-2-5), and finished undefeated in WCC play for just the second time in program history (first since 2000). The Toreros outscored opponents 17-4 in WCC play. Nicholson helped guide the team to two All-Region selections, the WCC Defender of the Year, the WCC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, the WCC Freshman of the Year, and 13 total All-WCC selections. Not surprisingly, USD earned United Soccer Coaches West Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to joining the Toreros, Nicholson was as an assistant coach for the UCSD women's soccer program from 1994 to 2005. During his stint with UCSD, the Tritons captured six national championships (three NCAA Division II and three at Division III).

In addition to his 29 years of coaching at the collegiate level, Nicholson has extensive experience coaching club soccer. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the director of the Temecula/Murrieta Soccer Club and from 1998 to 2003, he was the head boy's coach for the San Diego Surf. Many of the club teams at the Surf achieved regional and state success and many of his players were placed on national teams. In 1994, he coached the Nomads Boy's Under 16 club that won a national championship.

Fueling his coaching background is his playing experience. Nicholson spent time with the United Systems of Independent Soccer League, a men's semi-professional league. He played three seasons for the San Diego Top Guns from 1993 to 1995 and guided his team to the regional finals in 1994 and 1995.

Nicholson graduated from the University of Leeds in England, where he earned a degree in Sports Science in 1989. He captained his soccer team to the national finals in 1989 and his team won the national championship in 1986.

During Sanfilippo's time with the Toreros he has helped establish the program's winning culture which included the program's fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2025. Helping lead USD to a fourth straight West Coast Conference title making league history, Sanfilippo was instrumental in training the Torero student-athletes as they earned the ninth overall seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. He worked extensively with field players Ethan Warne (2025 WCC Defender of the Year) and All-WCC First Team midfielder Iain Wagner, as the Toreros had nine different student-athletes earn distinction from the conference for their strong play on the pitch.

In 2024, San Diego reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the 2012 season as the Toreros defeated UC Davis and Duke in postseason play. As the team collected 15 wins in 2024, the Toreros went 7-1 in conference play for their third straight West Coast Conference title. Sanfilippo was a key piece leading the roster as USD earned the conference's Goalkeeper of the Year, four All-WCC First Team picks, an All-WCC Second Team selection, two All-WCC Honorable Mentions and a pair of All-WCC Freshmen Team picks.

San Diego continued their strong momentum during the 2023 season as the program posted an 11-win campaign on their way to a second straight conference championship. USD continued its dominance of conference play as they put together a 5-1-1 overall record that included a shutout victory over Gonzaga at Torero Stadium on Senior Night to secure the automatic bid. The Toreros also tacked on some more hardware as they boasted the WCC Offensive Player of the Year, two All-WCC First Team nods, a trio of All-WCC Second Team picks, two All-WCC Honorable Mentions and two members of the All-WCC Freshmen Team.

Sanfilippo helped orchestrated one of the best seasons in program history in 2023. After the Toreros were selected to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, USD went a perfect 6-0-1 in conference play to secure the WCC Championship and advance to its first NCAA appearance since 2014. Not surprisingly, USD earned United Soccer Coaches West Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Sanfilippo joins the Toreros from Albion FC, where he coached from 2018 to early 2021. In his tenure with the club, he served as its General Manager/Director of Operations in addition to instructing the U-19 Developmental Academy teams. In 2019, he led the ’04 squad to the Fall NPSL 2019 Championship. While with Albion FC, Sanfilippo was the head coach for both the ’04 and ’06 MLS next teams.

Sanfilippo, a native of San Diego, California, attended San Jose State University, playing four seasons for the Spartans from 1999-2003 while earning a degree in Criminology. After his time at SJSU concluded, Sanfilippo put together a decorated professional career, playing for six different clubs from 2004-2016.
