    Simon Tobin

Head Men's Soccer Coach - San Jose State University

Postseason success has been a staple of Tobin’s time in San José as the Spartans made the Western Athletic Conference title match in the 2017, 2018 and 2022 seasons. For the 2021 season, he was named the WAC Coach fo the Year. He has continued to produce some of the top talent in the conference year in and year out, placing a total of 34 players on the All-Western Athletic Conference Teams throughout his tenure.

Tobin brings a 374-277-81 record over 36 seasons in men’s soccer into the 2024 season. His 1997 Roadrunners won the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship as part of eight NCAA Division I and II championship appearances. Of CSU Bakersfield’s seven conference titles, three were in the last four seasons (2010, 2011 and 2012) as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s (MPSF) Pacific Division winner.

Entering the 2024 campaign, Tobin’s 374 victories ranks at No. 5 in all of Division I among active coaches.

The native of London, England, was named CSU Bakersfield’s head coach for men’s soccer in 1987. In 19 seasons competing as a NCAA DivisionII program, the Roadrunners were ranked in the final top-20 national coaches poll 10 times. His teams posted .500 or better win-loss records 22 out of his 27 seasons and won 10 or more matches in a season 17 times.

The 1997 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Coach of the Year is a six-time conference Coach-of-the-Year in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and the MPSF.

Tobin cites CSUB’s NCAA Division I Tournament selection in 2011, in just the second year of the program being a fully fledged Division I team, as his biggest coaching achievement to date.

During Tobin’s career he has produced numerous top professional players, and also initiated the collegiate coaching careers of many former male and female players.

Tobin resides in Santa Cruz with wife, Amy, and daughter, Ava.

    Jason Hotaling

    Associate Head Coach, UC Davis

    Jason Hotaling ID Headshot

    Jason Hotaling

    Associate Head Coach, UC Davis

A veteran of the Aggie Soccer Field sidelines, associate head coach Jason Hotaling returns for his 19th season overall with the Aggies in 2023. Elevated to his current position in April of 2014, Hotaling’s duties include coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts, team travel and scouting, while also leading the development of UC Davis’ goalkeepers.

Under Hotaling's watch, UC Davis keepers have posted a combined save percentage over .700 in three straight seasons.

“Jason has been on my staff for many years, working his way up from a volunteer assistant to his new position as the associate head coach,” head coach Dwayne Shaffer said. “He has been instrumental in the development of our outstanding goalkeepers throughout the years and will now assume more responsibility in helping take our program to the next level.”

Hotaling has helped engineer the Aggies’ successful transition to the Division I level and the always difficult Big West Conference, helping lead UC Davis to a consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 (first round) and 2008 (second round), and another appearance in 2019 (second round). With Hotaling on staff, UC Davis earned eight consecutive trips to the Big West Tournament, winning the conference’s North Division and a spot into the tournament’s championship match in 2012, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The Aggies advanced to the semifinals in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2021.

In 2021 with Hotaling on staff, UC Davis returned from a one-year competition absence due to the Big West Conference canceling the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and went 9-10-1. The Aggies advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament semifinal, defeating CSU Bakersfield in the quarterfinals to get there. Goalkeeper Derrek Chan posted four shutouts and both Chan and Charles Janssen both had save percentages over .700.

In addition, the Aggies welcomed a 10-member signing class that comes in ready to contribute immediately to the 2022 squad.

UC Davis enjoyed a historic season in 2019, one that saw it win both Big West championships — regular season and the league’s year-end tournament — for the first time in program history, earn a bye and a No. 14 ranking in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament. Men’s soccer also recorded a historic accomplishment that season when it hosted Louisville in Aggie Soccer Field’s inaugural Second Round Tournament match.

With all-region standout Wallis Lapsley in goal, the Aggies’ defense allowed a paltry 13 goals throughout the championship campaign — one of the lowest totals in the nation, among all Division I teams, and in program history. Not only did men’s soccer match a program record with its 13 overall victories, its seven home wins also tie a program-best figure.

Under his tutelage, the Aggies earned a collective 81 All-Big West awards, including 15 first-team honorees. In only its second full season of play at the Division I level, Hotaling also helped tutor a pair of NSCAA All-Americans in 2008, as Quincy Amarikwa and Dylan Curtis earned second- and third-team honors, respectively.

Six other student-athletes: Amarikwa (2008), Dylan Curtis (2008), Brian Ford (2012), Omar Zeenni (2013), Roy Boateng (2017), Nabi Kibunguchy (2017) and Lapsley (2019) were named to the NSCAA All-Far West Region squad during his time on the sidelines, including first-team honors for Amarikwa and Curtis in their respective seasons.

    Matias Fernandez

    Assistant Coach UCSB

Fernandez's Central California roots run deep, having been both a player and coach in the city of Fresno since 2013. The former Central Valley Fuego FC goalkeeper comes to Santa Barbara from Fresno Pacific, where he played two seasons of his collegiate career and worked as the goalkeeper coach since 2017. In 2019, he helped the Sunbirds win the PacWest Championship and post a school record 1.2 goals-against average.

"It is a dream to be here, to be transitioning to a powerhouse university, where the weather is nice, the food is great and the soccer is excellent," Fernandez said. "Coach Tim Vom Steeg reached out in February and I instantly knew that I wanted to come coach and learn from him. The wealth of knowledge that he has is immense."

Fernandez has accumulated plenty of knowledge himself, entering his twelfth season of coaching. He has operated MSF Goalkeeping Academy in Fresno since 2013 and, along with his time at Fresno Pacific, has stints with Fresno State Women's Soccer and Central Valley Fuego FC's youth academy on his resume. As a player, he split his college career between Cal State Monterey Bay and Fresno Pacific, then played professionally for the Fresno Foxes, Valley FC, and Central Valley Fuego FC from 2017-2023.

    Cameron Shahrokhi

Associate Head Men's Soccer Coach - Fresno Pacific University

Fresno Pacific Director of Athletics Kyle Ferguson announced the appointment of Cameron Shahrokhi as the new Associate Head Men’s Soccer Coach on Thursday. Shahrokhi, a seasoned coach with a rich background in both playing and coaching soccer, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the Sunbirds program.

    Cameron Shahrokhi 150x150

    Cameron Shahrokhi

Associate Head Men's Soccer Coach - Fresno Pacific University

"We are excited to welcome Cameron to the Fresno Pacific family," said Ferguson. "His dedication, exceptional coaching acumen, and strong leadership skills will undoubtedly elevate our men’s soccer program. Most importantly, Cameron’s commitment to Christ and developing student-athletes both on and off the field aligns perfectly with our mission at FPU."

Shahrokhi’s coaching career is impressive and extensive. He has been the Boy’s Varsity Head Coach and Director of Soccer at Clovis North High School since 2017, leading the team to an overall record of 138-20-19 over seven seasons. Under his guidance, the team has won four conference championships and two section championships in 2023 and 2024, reaching the CIF State Regional Finals in 2023. His achievements have earned him three Conference Coach of the Year designations and the CIF Section Coach of the Year award in 2023.

Additionally, Shahrokhi has served as the Men’s Assistant Coach at Fresno City College since 2013, helping the team secure ten CVC Championships and two CCCAA State Championships. His previous coaching roles include stints at Buchanan High School, Clovis Crossfire, and California Odyssey Soccer Club, where he achieved numerous league and state titles. Notably, he coached back-to-back State Championships with California Odyssey’s ‘02 boys team and led them to a National runner-up finish.

Shahrokhi’s playing career also stands out. At Clovis West High School, he was part of the national championship-winning team in 2006, contributing as a role player during his sophomore year and becoming a key player in his junior and senior years. He was part of the team that won three consecutive CIF titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008, earning two All-TRAC selections and a spot on the All-CIF First Team in 2008. Continuing his soccer career at Fresno City College, Shahrokhi was a two-time CVC Champion and part of teams that were nationally ranked by the NSCAA, reaching #4 in the USA in 2009-10 and #5 in the USA in 2010-11. He was an All-CVC selection his sophomore season at FCC. He also played for the Fresno Fuego in the Premier Development League for two seasons.

Shahrokhi holds a B.S. Degree in Business Administration from California State University, Fresno, which he completed in Spring 2021. His comprehensive coaching experience and strategic acumen make him an invaluable addition to the Fresno Pacific University men’s soccer program.

Shahrokhi will work closely with Director of Soccer Jaime Ramirez for the development of the men’s soccer program. Ramirez has done an outstanding job leading the program to success and will continue as the lead Director of Soccer. Together, they aim to build on the strong foundation and take the program to new heights.

"I’m extremely excited to have Cameron join our coaching staff in this new role as Associate Head Coach,” said Ramirez. “Our program has had many fine assistant coaches with tremendous knowledge of our Central Valley community, and Cameron brings that to FPU. As a local high school product and former Fresno City College player, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his years of coaching at the community college and high school levels. It is a logical transition to move from where he has been to an NCAA DII program. More importantly, his faith in God will be instrumental in influencing the lives of the young men in our soccer program. Welcome to Sunbird Soccer, Cameron!"

Shahrokhi expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "I am honored to serve as the Associate Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Fresno Pacific University. I am eager to grow under Coach Ramirez’s mentorship while pushing our program to the championship level. I will work tirelessly to help develop our student-athletes on and off the field to reach their maximum potential. FPU has a rich soccer history and I am grateful to be a part of it. Go Sunbirds!"
