Assistant coach Ricardo Gutierrez joined head coach Leonard Griffin’s staff at Cal in May 2022, after previously coaching under Griffin at Grand Canyon.

In the 2021 season at GCU, Gutierrez was part of a staff that led the Antelopes to a 15-4-1 record, the WAC regular-season championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Prior to Grand Canyon, Gutierrez worked under Griffin at San Francisco from 2019-2021. While the West Coast Conference preseason poll picked USF to finish last in the spring 2021 season, Griffin and Gutierrez led the Dons to a third-place finish in the WCC.

Fernandez's Central California roots run deep, having been both a player and coach in the city of Fresno since 2013. The former Central Valley Fuego FC goalkeeper comes to Santa Barbara from Fresno Pacific, where he played two seasons of his collegiate career and worked as the goalkeeper coach since 2017. In 2019, he helped the Sunbirds win the PacWest Championship and post a school record 1.2 goals-against average.

"It is a dream to be here, to be transitioning to a powerhouse university, where the weather is nice, the food is great and the soccer is excellent," Fernandez said. "Coach Tim Vom Steeg reached out in February and I instantly knew that I wanted to come coach and learn from him. The wealth of knowledge that he has is immense."

Fernandez has accumulated plenty of knowledge himself, entering his twelfth season of coaching. He has operated MSF Goalkeeping Academy in Fresno since 2013 and, along with his time at Fresno Pacific, has stints with Fresno State Women's Soccer and Central Valley Fuego FC's youth academy on his resume. As a player, he split his college career between Cal State Monterey Bay and Fresno Pacific, then played professionally for the Fresno Foxes, Valley FC, and Central Valley Fuego FC from 2017-2023.

The 12 victories were the most ever for the Otters during their NCAA tenure and the CCAA Tournament victory over San Bernardino marked their first postseason victory at the Division II ranks.

Kane Ritchie was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year and headlined seven all-conference honors.

In 2022 Jaap led his squad to their first CCAA Tournament berth since 2007, as the Otters finished with an overall record of 8-8-2 and 6-5, good for fourth in the CCAA. At the culmination of the season, the Otters had four named to the All-CCAA team, including Collin O'Mahoney, the program's first ever winner of a CCAA postseason major award.

Jaap has amassed a overall coaching record of 24-18-10 since taking the helm in 2019. He has coached 12 All-CCAA honorees and one All-West Region honoree (Walmer Martinez, 2019). The program has also enjoyed academic success under Jaap, with 37 student-athletes being named the CCAA All-Academic team and two being named CoSIDA/CSC Academic All-Americans.

Jaap most recently served as the assistant at Division I Stetson University under former All–CCAA player Kyle Gookins in 2017. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Division I Florida International.

Jaap began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Brescia University in Ownesboro, Ky. While there as head coach, he led the Bearcats to the 2010 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

He left Brescia to join the staff at NCAA Division II power Rollins College. The Tars averaged 18 wins per season in Jaap’s four years on the bench, winning three Sunshine State Conference titles while making four NCAA Tournament appearances.

After beginning his collegiate playing career at the University of Mary (N.D.), Jaap transferred to Bresica, where he earned NAIA All–America honors as a sophomore in 2003. Injuries limited his role over his final two collegiate seasons.

He played club soccer in his native Scotland with the Hamilton Accies and earned two caps with the Scotland U18 National Team.

Jaap graduated from Brescia University in 2006 with a degree in business concentrating in human resources.
