    Bernardo Silva

Head Coach - Cal Poly Women's Soccer

Bernardo Silva, who previously served as an assistant on the Cal Poly coaching staff from 2013-16, was named the second head coach in the history of the Cal Poly women’s soccer program on Dec. 21, 2024.

Head Coach - Cal Poly Women's Soccer

“I’m so incredibly proud to welcome Bernardo back to the Mustang family,” Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman said. “He brings a tremendous amount of energy, passion and purpose to everything he does, and I’m confident those attributes will translate into our women’s soccer program excelling at a high level for a number of years under his leadership.”

Silva comes to Cal Poly after spending the last two seasons as the head coach at Cal State Bakersfield (2023-24). In 2024, Silva led the Roadrunners to unprecedented success. After being picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Silva helped CSUB women’s soccer become the first team in the school’s history to reach a Big West Championship since the institution joined the conference. Making their first-ever appearance in the Big West postseason tournament this fall, Silva guided the Roadrunners on a remarkable run to accomplish the historic feat. As the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament, CSUB took down three-time defending Big West champion UC Irvine 1-0 in the first round before securing a decisive 3-0 victory over No. 1 seed and Big West regular season championship Hawai’i in the semifinals to earn the program’s first Big West Championship appearance. In the final, the Roadrunners battled No. 3 UC Santa Barbara to a 2-2 draw before coming up short in penalties, 8-7.

Under Silva’s leadership in 2024, CSUB set Big West program records for conference points, victories, goals scored, fewest goals conceded and All-Big West honorees. Silva also helped the Roadrunners achieve their longest unbeaten streak in program history and highest finish ever in the Big West regular season standings. Across two seasons at the helm in Bakersfield, Silva amassed an 11-20-9 overall record and a 6-8-6 mark in Big West play.

“Being the head coach at Cal Poly has been a dream job for me ever since I left, and I don’t say that lightly,” Silva said. “I have so much belief in Cal Poly, it’s academic and athletic excellence, and what this program can achieve. I feel like it’s a sleeping giant and, in my opinion, this is one of the best jobs on the West Coast.”

Silva was an assistant on the Cal Poly women’s soccer staff for four years, serving as a volunteer assistant in his first season in 2013. He spent the next two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before being promoted to associate head coach in his final season in 2016. During that time, he mentored four All-West Region honorees and helped the Mustangs capture the Big West regular season championship in 2013. Prior to joining the Cal Poly women’s soccer staff for the 2013 season, Silva worked as an assistant on the men’s team for the Mustangs in 2012. During his sole season with the program, he helped the team match a school record for Big West victories (6).

Following his stint as an assistant on the Cal Poly women’s soccer staff, Silva served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, UCSB, during the 2017 season. He then joined the Sacramento State coaching staff for five seasons from 2018-22, taking on multiple roles. He was a volunteer coach in his first year before being promoted to an assistant role prior to the 2019 season. He was elevated to associate head coach following one of the greatest seasons in the history of the Sacramento State program in 2019 that saw the Hornets record a 17-match unbeaten streak, go 11-2-6 overall and set multiple program records, including for most shutouts (10) in a season and best goals against average (0.61). During the COVID-impacted 2020 season, Silva helped the Hornets extend their regular season unbeaten streak to a program record 22 matches. Silva took over as head coach at Cal State Bakersfield prior to the 2023 season.

Silva graduated from UCSB in 2011 with a degree in psychology with a double-minor in sport management and fitness instruction and played on the Gaucho men’s soccer team. While completing his degree at UCSB, the Portugal native worked as a regional scout for the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, identifying and recommending collegiate players for the franchise.

Silva, who possesses a U.S. Soccer Federation National C coaching license, also studied sport and exercise psychology at Loughborough University in England. While there, he added to his knowledge of soccer while serving as an intern for the famed Scottish club Hearts FC, observing training sessions and staff collaboration meetings, and studying manager-player dynamics. Silva also holds a personal training certificate from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

    Theresa Romagnolo

Women's Soccer Head Coach - St. Mary's College of California

After an 8th place WCC finish in 2022, Romagnolo got the Gaels back in the top half of the conference with another 10-win season in 2023 to finish 5th in the WCC standings. She recorded key non-conference wins against Idaho State, Sacramento State, San Jose State and 15th ranked Washington State where they went into Pullman to shutout the Cougars 1-0. After dropping their first three league games, the Gaels went unbeaten in their final five which included four wins to jump into 5th place. Romagnolo helped produce four all-conference selections including First Team recipient Makena Carr.

She led the Gaels to a 10-4-4 record in 2021, her first full fall season at Saint Mary's. The win total was SMC's best since 2011 and it was their best winning percentage since 2001. The team received votes in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 for the first time since 2004, registered the fourth-most shutouts in a season in program history, and had a player score eight or more goals in junior Suzuna Shibukawa for the first time since 2014.

Following the 2021 season, the Gaels had numerous postseason honors, including for the first time in school history, a freshman of the year. Saint Mary's also had a first team all-conference selection in Shibukawa and two honorable mention members in Maya Alcantara and AnnaMaria DiGeronimo.

Alcantara and Shibukawa were also named to the United Soccer Coaches 2021 NCAA Division I Women's All-Western Region Second Team and DiGeronimo was named to the All-Western Region Third Team. The program also had five players earn WCC All-Academic Honrable Mention in Alcantara, Emma Barthel, Emily Jensen, Isabella Santavicca, and Laura Trapero Sanz.

In her first season as head coach of the Gaels, Romagnolo led the team to a 4-3-2 conference record and 4-4-3 overall record. Saint Mary's had an incredible turnaround from the season prior as they posted their first winning WCC record in 16 years and best overall record since 2011. Under Romagnolo's tutelage, freshman Taylor Poland was named WCC Goalkeeper of the Year and became the team's first All-WCC First Team honoree since 2017. Alcantara was also selected to the Second Team, marking the program's most representatives on either team since 2010.

Romagnolo brings 16 years of collegiate coaching experience with her to Moraga, including head coaching duties at Notre Dame and Dartmouth. Romagnolo is also familiar with West Coast soccer as she's spent time at both Stanford and San Diego as an assistant.

The University of Washington alum most recently served as head coach for the Fighting Irish from 2014-18 with high levels of success each season. Notre Dame made the NCAA Tournament in all four years of her tenure, including two trips to the Round of 16, and claimed their first-ever ACC Regular Season Championship in 2016 under Romagnolo's tutelage. All told, Romagnolo posted a 51-21-13 record at UND and had a myriad of student-athletes receive honors ranging from Academic All-Americans to National Team and NWSL Draft selections.

Romagnolo left Notre Dame after her fourth season to spend time with her family and also was a coach at her alma mater in Seattle.

Prior to working in South Bend, Romagnolo spent three seasons leading the women's team at Dartmouth. In just her second year with the Big Green, the program posted their second-highest winning percentage ever with a 13-4-0 showing and improved by nine wins from the year prior. Dartmouth produced 16 all-conference players, three all-region selections, and an Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2012. Off the field, the Big Green had a 100 percent graduation rate, 3.4 team GPA, and had an academic All-American under Romagnolo.

As an assistant at Stanford, Romagnolo helped the Cardinal reach the Final Four in all three of her seasons, including two National Championship appearances. At San Diego, the Toreros reached the NCAA Tournament in three of her five seasons, and were consistently in the top-50 in the RPI.

As a player, Romagnolo was a standout at Washington as she was named all-conference all four years, an All-American and Scholar Athlete All-American, as well as helped her team win the Pac-10 Championship in 2000. She graduated in 2001 with a degree in business and played in the professional WUSA league for the San Jose CyberRays until 2003.

Theresa resides in Orinda with her Husband Alex and daughters Sierra and Giovanna.

She was previously an assistant at Colgate. In her first season with the Raiders, Johnson helped guide Colgate to its first Patriot League championship appearance since 2014. The Raiders capped the regular season with back-to-back shutouts to extend their Patriot League record of consecutive postseason appearances to 13. From there, the Raiders knocked off Boston University 1-0 in double-overtime and hosted the championship game for the first time since 2012.

Under Johnson’s guidance, Colgate landed one All-Patriot League First Team honoree, four Second Team selections, and two Third Team members. The Raiders finished the 2020-21 season 4-3-2 overall with a 3-3-1 conference mark.

Johnson came to Colgate after three seasons in the assistant post at Pennsylvania. She helped lead the Quakers to one of their best seasons in program history in 2018, which included their first Ivy League title since 2010 behind a 13-2-1 overall record and 5-1-1 conference mark.

Pennsylvania during Johnson’s tenure compiled 26 wins and 10 conference triumphs with two winning seasons. Johnson helped guide 13 All-Ivy student-athletes, including a Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and six first team selections.

During the 2018 season, Pennsylvania boasted one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Quakers led the nation in goals-against average, save percentage, and shutout percentage. Johnson helped guide Pennsylvania to 12 shutouts while allowing just five goals all season.

The 13 wins are the second-highest total in program history and the two losses were the second fewest in a season. Pennsylvania entered the season finale at 13-1-1 and 5-0-1, the best records in school history to that point all-time.

Johnson prior to her assistant post at Pennsylvania spent six years coaching youth soccer in Northern California. She served as the San Bruno Lowen Soccer Club U16 Girls head coach in San Bruno, leading the team to a second-place finish in the NorCal State Premier division in the fall of 2016 – earning the team a promotion to the NorCal State Championship division for spring 2017.

Prior to her time in San Bruno, Johnson was the Girls Director of Coaching for the San Mateo County Football Club – in addition to head coaching duties of the U17, U16 and U14 Girls National Premier League teams – during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As head coach of all three SMC clubs, each team was promoted to the next level of the National Premier League after just one season and oversaw two of her players lead all NPL divisions in goals scored in the fall of 2015.

She got her start in coaching in Tallahassee, Fla. as the Tallahassee United Football Club ‘94/’95 Girls head coach, as well as working with Warner Soccer as a player development coach from 2007-10. While in the Sunshine State, she served as a coach with Florida ODP where she scouted, evaluated and selected players for Florida state ODP teams. Johnson was also the assistant coach at the 2009 Region III Camp.

Johnson was a four-year letterwinner at Vanderbilt. Following her sophomore season, Johnson changed positions from midfield to forward and produced on the front line immediately – scoring in each of her first three starts. Johnson played in 32 of 33 games over her final two seasons in Music City. She was twice named to the SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (2000, 2001).

Johnson earned a Bachelor’s of Engineering with a minor in mathematics from Vanderbilt in 2003. She earned her United States Soccer Federation (USSF) ‘A’ License in 2014, as well a NSCAA Regional Goalkeeping Diploma.
