Back for its second summer, the Nike Swim Camp at Sewanee: The University of the South offers an elite training experience for competitive swimmers ready to take their performance to the next level. Directed by Coach Mark Fino and his experienced coaching staff, this swim camp focuses on stroke refinement, endurance training, race strategy, and overall technique improvement in a supportive, high-energy environment.

Conveniently located just an hour from Chattanooga, the camp will be held at the Robert Dobbs Fowler Sport and Fitness Center, home to the Fowler Center Natatorium. This premier facility includes a nine-lane pool, Colorado Timing System, and movable bulkhead for both 25-yard and 25-meter training—perfect for swimmers looking to improve their competitive edge.

The Nike Swim Camp at Sewanee: The University of the South is open to any and all entrants. For your safety and benefit, we recommend you have competitive swimming experience (e.g., U.S.S. age group, national qualifiers, high school swimmers, or summer league swimmers) and can swim at least 50 meters in all four competitive strokes: fly, back, breast, and freestyle.

    Head Coach

    Mark Fino begins his second season as head coach for men’s and women’s swimming and diving at Sewanee for the 2024-25 academic year.

    Fino brings a wealth of experience and a trophy case full of conference championships, swimmer and diver of the year awards and coach of the year honors from previous coaching stints.

    He spent the previous year working at the Chattahoochee Gold Swim Team in Cumming, Ga., with team members winning high school state championships, made US Open cuts and reached the finals at Winter Juniors and USA Swimming Futures meets. He also coached and organized a local recreation swim team, Dunmoor Swim Team, in Alpharetta, Ga.

    Fino worked seven years (2013-14 to 2019-20 academic years) as head coach for men’s and women’s swimming and diving at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, collecting eight Coach of the Year honors. Student-athletes garnered six Diver of the Year awards and five Swimmer of the Year accolades while the Blue Streaks won eight conference championships during his tenure.

    He coached NCAA All-Americans and Honorable Mention All-Americans in each of the last four years at JCU and his teams earned Academic All-America honors from the College Swim Coaches Association of America during all seven seasons. Fino also increased the size of the teams from 28 to 60 during his tenure.

    He previously coached at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, first serving as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs for two years (2002-03 to 2003-04) become becoming the women’s head coach for two seasons. (2004-05 to 2005-06). He then served as head coach for both teams from 2006-07 to 2012-13, overseeing NCAA All-Americans and Honorable Mention All-Americans in 2012 and working with athletes who posted NCAA provisional qualifying performances during four campaigns.

    Fino earned his bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 2002 and completed all coursework towards a master's in Exercise Science from Cleveland State in 2015. He was a member of four conference championship teams at Kalamazoo.

    He lives in Sewanee with his wife, Veronica, and their twin boys, Jon and Nick.

You can expect a high demand for these first-come-first-served camper spots, so please be sure to register early. This summer, Sewanee is offering a one-week overnight and day camp (9:00am-5:00pm) option for ages 9-17. Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other swimmers having similar abilities and goals. The camp staff accommodates your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.

  • Check-out: Overnight Campers: Check-out Friday at 12:00pm at TBD. Day Campers: Check-out Friday at 12:00pm at Fowler Center Natatorium.
  • Day Schedule: SUN 3PM-8:30PM, MON-THURS 9:00AM-5:00PM, FRI 9AM-NOON **Times subject to change
  • Meals: All meals are provided for Overnight campers. Lunch is provided for all day campers. (Lunch is not included on Sunday and Friday)
  • Program: The Stroke Technique program is designed to provide competitive swimmers with a better understanding of swimming fundamentals. Stroke refinement along with constructive feedback will be the focus of the camp and allows each participant to gain a greater knowledge of proper stroke mechanics and ways to improve themselves individually.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE

  • Team Discount: If five or more campers register together, each camper is eligible for a $25 discount. After all team members have successfully registered, contact us to receive a $25 refund per camper.

CAMP CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT

Check-in: Sunday, June 7th

  • Overnight Campers: Check-in Sunday between 2:00pm-3:00pm at TBD.
  • Day Campers: Check-in Sunday between 2:30pm-3:00pm at TBD.
  • Camp will begin with an orientation at 3:00pm and parents are welcome to attend.

Check-out: Friday, June 12th

  • Overnight Campers: Check-out Friday between 12:00pm-1:00pm at Smith Hall.
  • Day Campers: Check-out Friday at 12:00pm at Fowler Center Natatorium.
  • A camp wrap-up will be 11:30-12:00p for all campers at Fowler Center Natatorium.

2026 HOUSING

  • Dorm: TBA
  • Number of Campers Per Room: 2 per room
  • Roommates: Rooms are assigned by age & roommate requests. Roommate requests must be mutual and received no later than 14 days before the start of camp. If you don't have a roommate request, you will be placed in a room with someone near your age. It will be a great opportunity to meet someone new!
  • Bathrooms: Shared
  • Linens: Linens will be provided (e.g., sheets, blanket, pillowcase, pillow, towels, washcloth, bar of soap)
  • Air Conditioning: YES

SUPERVISION
The staff reside in the dormitories with the campers and participate in all activities. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEE?

  • Instruction: Morning, afternoon, and evening training sessions
  • Overnight campers: Dormitory housing on campus and all meals are provided.
  • Day campers: Lunch is provided.
  • Supervision: Staff members reside in campers’ quarters and participate in all activities.
  • Camp T-shirt & Prizes: Campers at multi-day camps will receive a Nike Swim Camps t-shirt and prizes.

INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY

  • Ratio: 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio
  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience per the director's discretion.
  • Equipment Needed: Please bring your water swimsuit, swim cap, goggles, swimmer’s snorkel, dryland clothes, sneakers, and towel(s)
  • Facility: Fowler Center Natatorium
  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

DAY CAMPERS

Checklist of Things to Bring: We recommend that all Day Campers bring a daily pack with the following items: swimsuit, swim cap, goggles, towel, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, sandals, water bottle, dry land gear (running shoes, t-shirt, athletic shorts, sweatshirt), and any other appropriate clothing for that day’s activities which will be described to you on the first day of camp.

Camp Schedule & Meals:

  • Sunday: Day Campers should arrive dressed and ready to swim. You will be assigned a counselor and given a complete schedule of all events during the week. Day Campers stay until 8:30pm. Dinner is provided.
  • Monday-Thursday: Day Camper Hours – 9:00am-5:00pm. Lunch is provided.
  • Friday: Day Camper Hours - 9:00am-12:00pm. Check-out is immediately after the camp concludes.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.
