4 Offensive Rebounding Drills

4 Offensive Rebounding Drills

Rebounding can be a highly effective tool to improve your offensive game play. Having the chance for a second shot during an offensive possession is critical and can lead to more points or a free throw opportunity. Forcing a player from the opposing team to foul you while you are rebounding can provide a huge advantage for you and your team. It can give you the opportunity to score more points and potentially putting that player in foul trouble. Here are four team rebounding drills commonly taught at Nike Basketball Camps.

1. Rebounding Technique

Facing the basket, split your team in two and form two straight lines on each side of the key. Have the first player in line pass themselves the basketball off the backboard. That same player will follow the ball by jumping up strong for the rebound with two hands, secure the ball, pivot and pass to the next player in line. Remember to grip the ball tightly under your chin and have your elbows out, this will make it harder for your opponent to steal the ball. Circle through this drill 5 times and focus on the technique of protecting the ball.

2. Golden Egg

Organize two teams, one offensive and one defensive, each of four players. The defenders will position themselves around in a circle with the ball sitting in the middle and the offensive players will be in outside of the circle, facing the defenders. Without fouling, the offensive players must try their best to secure the basketball on the inside of the circle. You are trying your best to emulate an offensive rebound by getting past the defense to secure the ball. Defenders must remember to box out by staying low and positioning their feet wide. This wide base will allow for more strength when boxing out. Run this drill for 5-10 seconds and then switch teams.

3. 3 on 3

Organize two teams with three players each. All standing in the key, have the offensive team rotate clockwise and the defensive team rotate counter clockwise. Continue to rotate in a circle until the coach shoots the ball, the offense must rebound the ball and transition into a scrimmage. After a point is scored, both teams will circle back up in the key and repeat the drill until the first team gets ten points.

4. Outlet

Have two players standing in the key and the rest of the players on the three-point line, split into two teams. The coach will shoot the ball and the players in the key must box each other out to fight for the ball. Whoever gets the rebound, their goal is to pass to their outlet players on the three-point line as fast as you can. This drill is to focus on speed and getting the ball back into your possession as quickly as possible.

The number of offensive rebounds your team completes in a game can weigh heavily on the result of the game, so stay aggressive. Check out more basketball drills like these ones and learn more at a Nike Basketball Camp this summer!
