Five Reasons To Go To A Summer Sports Camp

Camp All Star Tip1 1

To make new friends – You can meet and get to know kids from other states and countries at a sports camp.   The ice is easily broken as you usually have the common bond of enjoying a specific sport or sports in general.  Playing on a team with a common goal in a competition is an easy way to have “instant friends”.  The shyness and reticence among kids that have recently met is effortlessly pushed aside as they strive to do well for their team.

Try new things – A summer camp is a great place to give something new a try because there are usually activities at a camp that you haven’t ever tried before. There will be other campers trying out these novel adventures for their initial time as well.  In a camp situation you can almost always get more of a sport you like and pass on other events you tried, but didn’t enjoy.

Make memories – The competitions, the rainy day fun, campfires, laughing until you almost threw up, sleeping next to a stranger, hanging out with the opposite sex, the counselors you thought were cool and the ones you thought were weird, staying up on the last night because you didn’t want camp to end, your first slow dance and the pact you made to do it all again next summer.  These are just a small number of memories that may trigger warm thoughts all winter long and maybe for many years to come.

Building self-esteem – Heading off to a strange new place without all of your familiar backup people around you is a great confidence booster for those who haven’t encountered a situation like that before.  All of a sudden you may have to make a few more decisions about what your day is going to be like than you do when your family, teachers and coaches are around.  I have seen hundreds of homesick or sad kids march out to the parking lot to greet their parents on pick-up day with their heads held high and their chests puffed because they had made it through a week or two of camp on their own.

It’s fun! – Everything at summer camp is set up to help every camper enjoy every minute of the day.  There should be constant laughter, excitement and surprises around every corner.  There are new thing and old things to experience.  There are new friends to make and old friends to reunite with. You may find your new passion at camp and/or your best friends for life.  You may win and you may lose, but the enjoyment was being out there with your buddies and giving it your best shot and the ice cream afterwards!  It’s completely foreign to your everyday life which makes it so sweet to look forward to those special days at summer camp.
