What is Pickleball?

What is pickleball group rally

When you hear "pickleball" do you think of tennis? Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Pickleball resembles similar sports such as tennis, ping pong and badminton. Players use a paddle made of wood, composites or graphite. The balls look a lot like a whiffle ball however, they are denser and more durable representing a similar size of a baseball. The court size is 20 feet wide and 40 feet long, representing a badminton court size, and the net is 34 inches tall, a tad shorter than a net used in tennis. As a visual, 4 pickeball courts fit on one tennis court. People of all ages can participate and it can played as singles or doubles.

As a sport that was created in Seattle, WA in 1965 by three dads to where it is now, much has changed. The popularity has grown tremendously over the past few years with the sport really thriving in U.S. and Canada while also becoming popular in Europe. The growth in the pickleball community strives from the ease to pick up the sport, straightforward rules and the fun/social aspect that comes with that. Singles offers a more strenuous type of workout for those looking to move around more and work harder to rally against their opponent. Doubles offers a less strenuous environment with longer rallies, lower physical demands and more opportunities to socialize.

The greatest aspect of pickleball is that this sport can be so easy to pick up, inexpensive, social and healthy. There is endless opportunity with this sport for individual improvement, development of fundamentals and improving technique. There are many people in the past that have written-off pickleball that now can't get enough of it, playing daily for hours at a time.
