Pickleball Tip: How To Be Okay With Losing

Nike Pickleball Camps caught up with new Camp Director, Mitch Elofson of The Picklebarn in Mankato, MN, and he offered some great tips on a key aspect of pickleball, losing!

Pickleball can be a challenging sport physically, but it can sometimes take an even greater toll on you mentally and emotionally if you let it! Every lost point can be a “mini defeat,” and responding to these challenges during the course of a match is what separates the good players from the great ones. Not to mention the way that points are lost in pickleball, oftentimes points are lost from a winner being hit, which can be extra salt in the wound. It is important to understand that losing these points is necessary while on the road to victory and all the losses make us better players.

Here are some quick ways to move past those mini defeats in pickleball:

1. Understand that losing is always going to be part of the sport, whether you are losing points or matches, everyone loses at some point!

2. Give your opponent credit where credit is due, congratulate them when they hit a good shot, it will make you feel better!

3. Remember that you are your best coach, don’t berate yourself if you wouldn’t want a coach saying the same thing to you. Try your best to think and speak to yourself positively!

To receive more tips like this and instruction directly from Mitch Elofson and his team of certified pickleball teaching professionals, join us for camp this summer at The Picklebarn.
