The Technique

In freestyle one of the best things to do is not think about taking a breath but rather take a quick 'bite' of air. What tends to happen when a lot of swimmers think about breathing they lift their head too high and for too long. While this is happening many will over rotate and drop their elbows causing their pull to become less effective. In addition it takes much longer to bring the head down, if it is too high, which can also shorten the length of someone's stroke. Thinking about the quick "bite" can help to speed up the time it takes to get a breath and help with the efficiency of the stroke.
