5meter Water Polo Camps: How to Play the Counter Attack with Olympian Water Polo Goalie Genai Kerr
Olympian and Nike 5meter Water Polo director, Genai Kerr provides some tips for water polo goalies on how to play the counter attack.
Communicating During a Counter Attack: It is very important to communicate with your defenders early on, between half court and seven meters, any later is too late. Also, you should not only be yelling but pointing so that your defenders have a visual as well.
Communicating With Your 2m Defense: I communicate with the 2m defenders by letting them know where the ball is, and what I want them to do as far as side and front as much as possible or stay behind and push out. I also like to communicate to have them draw the 2m a little bit closer so I can come out for a steal.
Handling "One on Goalies": I typically play at an angle to try to encourage the attacking opponent to pick one side rather than coming down the middle of the pool. I come out as far a possible without giving up a lob, and hopefully allowing my teammates enough time to catch up. The closer the opponent gets to the goal, the higher my hands get.
