Field Hockey Tips to Improve your First Touch

Field Hockey Basics

Field Hockey beginners will learn the fundamentals on how to play the game!

The skills needed to be an elite field hockey player can be overwhelming. The best way to improve your game is by focusing on the fundamentals! Below are some tips to improve your first touch to become an overall better field hockey player. Come join us this summer 2022 and learn more tips and tricks to improve your game at our Nike Field Hockey Camps.

Tip #1: Stay calm under pressure. You want to stay calm when taking your first touch, so you don’t hesitate when taking the next move. Pressure from opponents is unavoidable, so you want to be prepared to make a quick and strategic move away from them.

Tip #2: Catch the ball (with the stick). A common mistake that field hockey players make when receiving their first touch is pushing the ball, causing it to bounce off their stick. The goal is to catch it by cradling the ball as it comes to you, so you have more control.

Tip #3: Use your open space. The direction of your first touch is crucial for your next play. While on the field, be aware of where you have open space, so when the ball comes to you, you can utilize it without hesitation. If you don’t have space, make some by creating distance between yourself and your opponent.
