Golf Tip: Three Tips to Improve Your Chipping

Golf Tip 3 Chipping Image

Learning how to properly chip is one of the quickest ways to improve your handicap. No matter your skill level, chipping is an important part of any golf game. Improvements in chipping can help save valuable strokes on the course, and you will notice the difference on your scorecard too! Having slow and controlled movements in your chip shot will help lift your ball in the air to provide more accuracy in your game. Use these tips below if you want to create the foundation for a better swing. If you enjoy reading tips like these, check out our Nike Junior Golf Camps!

Tip #1 – Position of the Ball:

When you line up to your ball, make sure the ball is positioned slightly back in your stance, and place your hands at a diagonal with your club slightly in front of the ball. When the ball is back in your stance, make sure your clubface is square with the ball to maintain proper contact. When you go to take your swing, the ball being positioned slightly back in your stance will make it easier to hit down on the ball. When you hit down on the ball, the ball goes up. This creates the perfect ball flight for your chip.

Tip #2 – Have a Narrow Stance:

Begin with a narrow stance during your chip. Having a narrow stance will allow your body to easily rotate during your swing to have a successful shot. In your narrow stance, slightly adjust your toes angled toward the target and this will maintain an accurate direction for your chipping. Lastly, make sure you have more weight distributed on your front foot which will help the angle of your chip shot.

Tip #3 – Use your Arms:

In the majority of your game, you guide your swing with your legs and trunk using rotation. When you are chipping, a good stroke will utilize your arms to stay fluid and steady during the swing. Your arms and shoulders will form a triangle when holding the club and the goal is to maintain that the triangle stays intact while completing the swing. When swinging, keep your backstroke at about hip level to ensure the stability of your arms and the trajectory of the ball. Trying to hit the ground slightly before the ball can help get the ball up in the air and roll towards your target.
