Golf Tip: Improving Your Mental Game
Golf is one of the most mentally challenging sports in the world. Being able to have the mental endurance to stay calm and focused under pressure is one of the greatest skills a golfer can have. Learning how to control your mindset on the course will take your performance to a new level! With a couple of these tips, you will learn how to improve your mental game on and off the course! Tip #1 – Control the Controllables:
In golf, you cannot control the weather, or how busy the course may be. What you can control is your effort and your attitude. Being able to focus your energy on what you can accomplish will help strengthen your performance. Being able to control the controllables means to identify things that are in and out of your control, and not letting the things outside of your control disrupt your focus. Second, find a way to control how you react to an unwanted or unexpected outcome. Be willing to let go of that emotion to best ensure that it does not affect your performance later on. Lastly, identify the negative thoughts you are having and see if they are something in or out of your control. If they are out of your control, let them go. If they are in your control, try to reframe them and turn them into an opportunity for growth rather than leaving them as barriers that can hinder your performance.
Tip #2 – Don’t Say Don’t:
Because golf is such a mental game, typically you hear phrases such as “don’t miss” or “don’t hit that direction.” When we use these words like “don’t” or “can’t” it often will make you do just what you are telling yourself not to do. Instead, focus on what you want to do. For example, tell yourself “hit the back of the ball”, or “swing through” and it will guide your motivation to accomplishing that task rather than focusing on the negatives that might disrupt your performance. Using positive self-talk will drastically change your game on the course. Find motivators and key words to strengthen your mental game and improve your performance!
