Nike Soccer Tip: How to increase the power behind your kick

Most soccer athletes want to improve the power behind their kicking. Corner kicks, shots on goal, penalties, and goalie kicks are critical to a team's success. All require a balance of accuracy and power. Here are some tips we teach at Nike soccer camps to help increase power in your kicking.

Tip #1: Relax your setup: Many think that to reach maximum power all the muscles need to be activated. However, the only flexed body part is the ankle. When you set up to kick the ball, secure your stance, and focus on how you will connect with the ball.

Tip #2: Breath through the kick: By syncing your breathing to your kicking, you will add force and power without exhausting yourself. As you approach the ball, inhale, and exhale as you kick.

Tip #3: Concentrate on your connection: Keep your eyes on the ball, visualize how and exactly where you want to make contact.

Tip #4: Quick run up & Large stride: Increase your run-up speed in a controlled fashion. Bring your kicking leg all the way back close to your behind. Then allow your knee to come through first and connect with the ball with a whipping type motion. Depending on the height you want on the ball, either stop your follow through right after connection for a low strike, or follow through under the ball for height.

Tip #5: Film your shot: Watching tape on your form and breaking it down in slow motion can help to specify which area of your shoot needs more work. Pay attention to how your body moves in response to the ball and how you can use your movement to your advantage.
