Camp Director
Matt Tyler
In August of 2009 Matt Tyler was named head coach of the Wartburg College Knights men’s and women’s tennis teams, after spending the 2008-09 seasons as the Division I Colgate University assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach.
Under his direction, the Wartburg women's squad is 46-27 and the men's team is 34-37 during his time at Wartburg.
Read Full BioSince being the head coach for the Knights, Coach Tyler has taken the previously 7th place women’s tennis team to a two-year 3rd place finish in the Iowa conference and a second consecutive year appearance at the IIAC NCAA automatic qualifier tournament. The 2009 regular season record of 13-3 set a Wartburg College record for wins in a season—overall the team finished with a record of 17-9. The 2010 women’s team season saw an equally successful season, with a 12-4 regular season record.
The Knights men’s tennis program has also seen instant improvement under the guidance of Coach Tyler. In the 2009-10 season, the team finished in 3rd place for the first time in 15 years, coaching the Knight’s number one doubles team to the school’s first A Flight league doubles title since 1978. Five singles players also successfully made it to the quarterfinals round of the IIAC individual championships. The 2011-12 team also took third at the Iowa Conference Championships.
Adding to an already record-setting season for the men’s tennis team, Coach Tyler was recognized as the Iowa Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2010. Coach Tyler is the first to be awarded IIAC Coach of the Year in the Knights' tennis program history. Tyler was also named the USPTA Missouri Valley Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2010.
Prior to joining the Wartburg College Knight’s tennis program, Coach Tyler helped successfully coach the Colgate Raiders men’s tennis team to a record of 12-8, finishing second in the Patriot League after regular season play. During the 2008-09 season, the Raiders men’s tennis team defeated Army for the first time in seven years and advanced to the semi-final round of the conference tournament, with two players making it on the All-Patriot League teams.
The Raiders women’s 2008-09 season ended with an 8-13 record, making it to the semi-finals of the conference tournament after defeating No. 4 seeded Holy Cross in the first round. With the help of Coach Tyler, the number one women’s player was named to the All-Patriot League First Team.
Coach Tyler also has an extensive professional tennis career. After being 2nd team All-RMAC at NCAA Division II Mesa State College in Colorado, he was named the 2006 USPTA Intermountain Region Men’s Open Player of the Year. He was also listed as a top 500 player on the USTA Men’s Pro open rankings and the 4th top Colorado Men’s Open player in 2007.
Since moving to Iowa, he continues to play various tournaments throughout the summer months and is the top-ranked player in the state. In 2010, Coach Tyler was the Waterloo Open champion, the runner-up at the Quad-States Open, and runner-up at the Iowa Open.
Tyler won the Iowa Open in 2011 and 2012 and ranks as the top tennis player in the state.
