Soccer Tip: How to Demonstrate More Effectively

Demonstrations play a big role in coaching youth soccer players. It is important that coaches are able to execute demonstrations effectively so that their players understand every factor involved. Executing Demonstrations Effectively

Gather Attention

• Gain control of the group’s attention
• Set the scene so that your campers know what they should be looking at
• Use verbal instruction to get the campers’ attention (“Freeze,” etc.)

Get the Quality Right

• Highlight the important parts and don’t overload the campers with information
• Show enthusiasm… it rubs off on your campers
• Never rush through your demonstrations

Know Your Stuff

• Be clear on what you want to demonstrate
• Keep it short, but don’t cut out important details
• Practice the demonstration beforehand so you can execute it correctly

Camper Involvement

• Get your campers involved by asking questions/having them demonstrate
• Allow your campers time to ask any questions regarding the demonstration
• Giving campers responsibility gives them confidence

Assessment

• Gather your campers and check if they understood the message
• Immediately give your campers the opportunity to try out the skill
• Correct any faults you see
