Tips for being a Great Soccer Defender

Defense

Being a defender in soccer, your primary job is to deny penetration. It's important to slow the progress of the ball as much as you can so the offense can't get in their flow. You are in most danger when the opposition has the fast pace that they want. Use these soccer tips to help your defensive mindset:

  1. Positioning – Being in the correct position allows you to see the field and anticipate the next move of the attackers. When you are out of position as a defender it makes it easier for the attackers to achieve their target pace.
  2. Strength – It is important to use your strength as a defender do to all of the physical action with the strikers. Being able to stand your ground and defend your goal comes with strength.
  3. Communication- This is key when playing a team sport. Everyone needs to be on the same rotation to prevent incoming attackers. Being in the back field allows you to see everything that is going on the field. By relaying the information to their teammates this allows them to know the gameplan.
  4. Composure- Being able to play at your best under high pressure situation. Staying calm makes it easy for you to stay clear minded and get your job done as a defender.

The defender's role in stopping forward movement by the offense is not limited to overpowering the attacker. They must work to rush, pressure and confuse the attacker, thus causing them to make mistakes. Taking advantage of your opponent's errors makes it easier for you to win the ball and deny penetration toward your goal. A solid defense is a crucial part of a successful soccer team.
